Reading a bit, I understood that installing a towbar was the best way to have a rear recovery point, with a D-shackle on the hitch.

Maybe I'm slow... but I haven't managed to find any hitch recovery point that fits the 1-1/4 hitch that's standard on the Foz?

Should I be better just dropping the hitch (I never tow anything) and just get the equalizer strap instead?

So far I was looking at that recovery strap:

2x shackles:

Equalizer strap:
???

...and I'll DIY some Maxxtrax from bread crates.

You mean something like this?

Yes, i saw that one, however reading the reviews makes me believe it might not be worth trusting my recovery on that...

No way would I be using those bow shackles....it MUST have the SWL stamped on it to be safe.

eg:
BLACK RAT 3.2 TONS 16x19 mm x2 BOW SHACKLES - eBay
BLACK RAT 4.7 TONS 19x22 mm BOW SHACKLE - eBay

Dont get the big heavy snatch straps designed for the mammoth 4WDs, get one around 5T if you can (more stretch equals less damage):
RIDGE RYDER 5,000KG SUV SNATCH STRAP - Supercheap Auto Australia

Also:
RIDGE RYDER 8,000KG EQUALIZER STRAP - Supercheap Auto Australia

Not sure where to go over there but this gives you an idea of what to look for :iconwink:

I run a rated shackle through a ball mount hitch (without the ball of course). I've got 6.5 ton WLL 3/4" shackles and had to enbiggen the hole just a tad.

They do have it :) That being said I might go with a different one, at 22$/each they are some of the most expensive.

The one I got here is 10,000lbs which is about 4.6 tons. And just so we're clear, "snatch strap" & "recovery strap" are the same... right? Or...?

It does! Thanks! Though... I don't find a lot of results for "equalizer strap". Is there an alternative name?

The ball mount hitch is sturdy enough for that? if so that might be the most straightforward solution, though I'm not sure if the local 4x4 club will accept that. Else I might check with a local fabricator for something custom... with proper tools, it should be an easy enough job.

The guy's I wheel with are pretty strict about safety and don't have a problem with it. It's rated a bit higher than the warn 1 1/4" UTV unit on amazon. I've used it with a snatch strap to get my Foz un-high centered off of the same boulder (twice) with the help of another ORS member.

Yep, they stretch under load. Winch extension straps & tow straps dont, which means the next thing to stretch will be your chassis!

Don't think so, but I cant see any reason why you cant use a tree trunk protector...basically the same thing just a bit wider...

Sure is. Like EJ, thats what many people use. As long as its a quality RATED product, you can feel confident.

WARNING: under NO circumstances should any recovery items be attached to a towball. They can & do snap off, becoming high velocity weapons. Deaths have occurred!

Simply remove the towball & you have an excellent recovery point

My advice would be spend a few extra dollars getting a good brand, high quality recovery gear. The difference in price is less than the cost of a tank of petrol, yet the difference in quality, therefore safety, can be huge...It comes down to safety & peace of mind :)
