What's it worth...?? the power of depreciation.

Just out of interest, thought I'd start a thread on what our cars are 'worth'.
Here is my model from 'Redbook'.
Would be interested in what the 'market value' of others' cars in 'stock' form is.
Also a good tool for those looking to purchace a platform to mod.
The Gen 3 Outback is starting to look a very affordable 'platform'...

110 -180k klm... ha, try 340K !

Insured for $13,000+

If I 'lost' it I'd replace with a late GEN 3 - including SubaXtreme front and rear racks, etc. Would still come out in front!

What makes it "time" legman?
Is yours a 'company car' or a tax-related lease, for example, not that it is any of my business, but I can see how that can force you to change.
Not being in that situation I' happy to hang on to mine and keep it alive.
Due to the dreaded 'turn key depreciation' I'd never spend my own money on a NEW car. Besides, the new ones have so few mods that can be done, due to ABS, ESC, etc. that applies to all makes, of course.
Anyway, each to his own.

Well my car is worth nothing and after pouring in about 4x what the car is worth, I'm going to keep it. Even though I hate it. lol Mines only insured in stock form for about $6000, almost not even worth it as it cost me 1/10th of that as I'm under 25yrs.

I know of quite a few people who come out in front after loosing their car and getting one similar due to the car being insured for so much..

I will be buying a new(to me) car next year though as a road car.. It's surprising what you can get that's just 2-3 years old, yet $10-20k off the new price.
(Thinking Golf GTI, SH Foz XT, Audi A4 turbo or something modern, luxury and fast'ish for aroun 25-35k)

Both of ours are still attracting roughly what we paid for them - Roo2 nearly 12 months ago; and RonnyRoo about 3.5 months ago. That's the dealer sale price, which is where we bought. Buying from a reputable dealer who has been in business for many years is worth the premium price paid, IMNSHO.
Of course, one can often buy considerably cheaper privately, but this has significant risks, ALL of which are borne by the purchaser ...

Needless to say, they are insured for a lot more than we paid for them (agreed value policies on both - +16% on RonnyRoo and +31% on Roo2). Our insurer agreed that we had bought well in both cases, and we had no trouble getting them to insure us for a realistic replacement value for similarly kitted out cars.

Also took RonnyRoo to Subaru for an end of warranty check up, and they could find nothing wrong with it ... No charge, but the check up is recorded on the invoice, and by taking it to them, we fulfilled the "consideration" condition of a valid contract.
Basically, this is very cheap "insurance", because either the vehicle is in more or less faultless condition (as it appears to be), or they have failed to detect something that they should reasonably be expected to have 1) checked; and 2) rectified; under warranty. In the latter case, they have just signed up to extend their warranty ... :iconwink:  . There are one or two advantages to becoming old ... and cunning ... :rotfl:.

Heh, you can cross check your rides down there in Aus with the evaluation standard here in the US - Kelley Blue Book. https://www.kbb.com/whats-my-car-worth/

You can use 80537 as an area code when it prompts you for it. You might be surprised ;)

Kelly says $6,695 for a similar 2.5 litre '05 manual Outback, with 200,000 miles.
So, about half the Aus value, but then new cars are similarly cheaper there as well, so percentage value second hand is probably similar.

I could sell my car for roughly only $2K less than I paid for it 2-years ago thanks to buying it at a cheap price to begin with (the dealer actually had cardiac problems whilst negotiating with me).

I too have invested a lot of money into it. Its to a standard I'm very happy with both as a daily driver and something to go offroading on the weekends. So I don't intend on selling it any time soon.

work related lease, i have already extended it 1 year have the option for 1 more.

My employer is looking at offering staff novated leases, as there is virtually nothing we can salary sacrifice at present.
Apparently we can novate our existing vehicles.
Fuel AND maintenance will both be covered under the lease arrangements.
THAT would work for me!!!

sounds great, my employer will only cover vehicles up to 5 years old and they prefer if we get new, but the car ends up costing very little with the tax advantages so i can't complain too much.

You can do this with your existing vehicle? I've only heard of leasing a new vehicle on a salary sacrifice setup. I'd love to have my fuel paid from income tax-free money - trips would be a pot load easier to afford!

As for the value of my ride, well, I doubt it'd be on those systems and if it is that it wouldn't be worth much! A bit like that website - "how safe is your car?" - if your car is not listed it will tell you that your vehicle is only as safe as how you drive it, which is so true!

Cheers

Bennie
