Speedo reading 10% out

Fellas,
I've finally got the car squared up, with new springs up front and the alignment done, so I can start thinking about fettling her for the long term. One point that I noticed whilst driving about, is that the speedo reads 10% out compared to my GPS. Is this usual? Of course it has a pile of implications, such as, my mileage is 10% worse that I thought, I'm driving 10% slower than I read (ie I'm doing 63mph, not 70mph on the motorway.) and my servicing arrives 10% sooner also. So now my car indicates that it has done 60k miles, when in fact it has done 54k!

Is there a way of changing this, or do I have to start looking at different tyres the next time that I change?

Also, would 215 70 16's fit under a year 2000 leggy OB?

Cheers

My 03 XS is the same, apparently all Subies are 10% or thereabouts out on the speedo when compared to a GPS, we should never get booked for speeding anyway.

My Forrie is the same - under on standard tyres and about right on 215/65 16.

Just because the speedo is wrong doesn't mean the odometer is out by the same amount - do a check with with the measure KM's you see on the freeways.

Cheers

I get that speedos are out a bit, but 10% across the board is too much really.

Just put bigger tires on. When I put A/Ts on my speedo is spot on now. I guess I never noticed it was off before but makes sense.

Not really, they tend to go between being dead on and off by 6 mph. Jeep is the worst here in the USA. The one way that one does benefit is on warrenty. It actually makes the warrenty last a little longer :)

As the tyres wear the amount the speedo is out will change.

tyre wear on my 205 x 65 x 16's only account for 1.2% max.

Also, if the speedo is reading high, the warranty runs out 10% quicker (although this is not my issue as the old girl is 8!)

Keep 'em coming.:)
