I just noticed a small coolant leak coming from the thermostat, so I'm off to get a new gasket.

My question is, should I get genuine or non-genuine?
Do I need to use gasket goo & if so, which one?

I also have a small oil leak from the oil filler neck where it bolts onto the engine. I've checked the bolts...they're tight. I'm guessing a non-genuine gasket would be fine for this.

I always used to use Silastic to ensure a good fit of gaskets with old/less than perfect mating surfaces. I don't know if the product is still available. Was made by Dow Corning, IIRC.

I also have a roll of heavy gasket paper for the making of 'bespoke' gaskets when the need arises :iconwink: ...

If you Google "silastic", it lists suppliers. It used to be carried by every automotive store, so I would think that Repco, SCA and/or Autobarn would still stock it.

It's a terrific product, and can even be used instead of a gasket, in an emergent situation. I always preferred to use some kind of gasket, even if just the old damaged one held together with the Silastic.

Being silicon based, it also peels off/cleans up superbly, unlike the original Gasket Goo type product, which I always found to be a PITA to use/re-use.

PS: NOT suitable for cylinder head or exhaust gasket use.

I'd just use gaskets from Repco, Supercheap, etc... unless they are unable to get them (I've had this happen for my water pump gasket.. :()
In which case get genuine.

How many k's on the clock now Nachaluva? It could be the shaft seal on the water pump - this will require the pump to be replace in my experience. Painful I know, but since you'll need the cam belt etc off it's a good time to outlay the cash (this is hard to do even at the best of times) to replace the belt and everything that goes with it.

Also check to make sure it's not a leak from one of the pipes from the heater to the water pump.

I hope it's an easy fix.

Cheers

its only a couple of drops of coolant atm. Definitely coming from the engine side of the thermostat housing. However, today I did notice the right side of the engine was a little noisy. I didnt have time to poke around too much but it seemed to be coming from the A/C compressor. I hope thats not gonna give me any trouble! :(
