My clutch has been making a bit of a whirring noise and also smelling when i i have been riding it as per reversing my sons jet ski up a slope into it's parking spot.
This morning i was talking to a RACQ approved service centre near home and he quoted me roughly $800 to do a clutch replacement with an Exceed (think this how you spell it) clutch including machining the fly wheel and all the other stuff.
He did mention this was for a 'normal' flywheel and not a dual mass flywheel which he thinks some Subies have.
Mine is an 05 model.
Does anyone know if this model has a normal or dual mass flywheel???

Im pretty sure sg foresters do have a dual mass flywheel. In the US they don't but in Aus i think they do.

$800 to do a full clutch replacement including parts and flywheel machining seems like a reeally good price. Especially if you mean Exedy clutch as they are up there as some of the best.

This quote was not for a dual mass set up but he did say there is a an after market single set up that can replace the dual mass flywheel which is about $1000 plus, i think, fitting. He told me the dual mass set up is around $2000.
The quote was for an Exedy.

This doesn't mean anything to me but could be of some help.
On further reading it does mention dual and single mass flywheels so i will probably have to work off my VIN.

If you've got a dual mass fly wheel and you need to replace the clutch, DITCH THE DUAL MASS! They shag out as I believe they're similar to a harmonic balancer in their construction - a tough rubber ring is built into it somewhere to reduce drivetrain noise and vibration. But it doesn't last as long as I think they (the manufactures) thought they would.

Those that have done it swear by it. You will experience some harshness that wasn't there before but if you're a good driver you'll change your driving style to make it smoother again. Clear as mud?

From everything i can gather i certainly will be going to a single mass flywheel if i don't already have one and i will take the VIN no. to the bloke tomorrow so he can check it out for me.

If you give your VIN to a Subaru dealer they can tell you everything you need to know bout your beloved Subie

Ok. It turns out mine is a DM flywheel and the quote to replace it with an Exedy SM flywheel/clutch kit, fitted with a new rear seal etc is within a few dollars ....$1500.
What do think???

Well...to say i am a bit confused is an understatement!
I went to a Subie place that is near home and talked to them about my clutch. According to them my VIN says i have a single mass flywheel.
The other bloke reckons off my VIN i have a DM flywheel.
The Subie guy said to replace it with an Excedy SM kit would cost about $1500 for the kit plus labour all up say $2000. The other bloke reckons the kit is around $950 plus labour...all up say $1500.
The Subie guy has quoted me $1035 to do the clutch plus rear main seal IF it is a SM set up.
Anyone got any ideas re the Excedy price?? What do think about these quotes??

Maybe get in touch with Subaru Australia and ask them about your VIN number/flywheel setup.

I did ask the Subie guy if it was worthwhile doing this and he said that they would just work off the VIN number which is all he/they can do.
My previuos experience(s) with Subaru Australia makes think he is right as i have always found them to be not only rude but very unhelpful and dismissive... that is...'what are you doing ringing us??. Ring the bloody dealer' type of thing.
It would be good to be able to get a trade price on the DM to SM kit as then i could see why the big price difference in the 2 quotes and question them about it.

Never did anything. Now living at Tathra. I not even sure where the nearest Subie dealer is. Seems ok but i can still smell it at times.

I had my DM clutch replaced at 188,572 kms on 12/10/12011 and the torque difference when climbing the hill in and out of Caloundra Qld was the first thing I really noticed, I have never had any harshness and I'm now up to 219,000+ kms.

Ditching the DMF is the best thing I have ever had done to my Forester. :woohoo:
