Just thought I'd post up abit of info. I know Barry had to replaced either one or two of his rear wheel bearings a little while ago (a month or two I think) and it cost him somewhere around $900-1000 from memory.

I had to replace one in my Forester and while quoted $400-800 for a mechanic/shop to do the job I managed to do it for $117 and change along with a few hours effort and a mates help(couple of beers).

The bearing was $67 from Repco and $50 to get the old bearing pressed out and new one pressed in by a near by local mechanic. Having never done one before I just worked on removing the rear hub which was over all easy except for the hand/disk brake. That was a pain to get off and I didn't manage to get it back on (Until I can get someone who knows what they are doing to help me  :iconwink:), so currently have no handbrake. :rolleyessarcastic:
But it just goes to show that you can save yourself some money :iconwink:

I had one go bad at 150,000 miles, got a new bearing, housing, and all components for about $400 and was charged $100 to put them all in.

I also drove with the bearing bad for over 15,000 miles... although it was a little noisy, I had no other problems with it.

Subaru of Austin tried to get me to pay them $900 for one bearing when the rear driver one went out. I politely told the rep to f*** himself.
I went the next best route.. Bought one myself (cost around $60 for the good made in america or japan ones), then paid a fam friend another $60 to put it in. I drove on mine bad for several thousand miles & holy hell was it loud! Like skulls tho, had no other side effects.
