Hi Guy's,
I'm just looking at some more rims for the Forester. While I would like to stay with 15" rim's I'm thinking 16" might be a better option plus then I have more choice of tyres aswell as rims.

I don't want to go too overboard but am looking at some genuine subaru rims over aftermarket. Plus aftermarket cost a fortune....

I was looking at these and wondering if they would look good on my Foz? They are 99 WRX Rims which aren't too out there but might just set the foz apart from it's stock steelies.. What are peoples opinions? Anyone good at photo shop and could roughly photoshop them on a pic of my Foz?

What do you think? Be honest :)

The main benefit of the alloys is that the ones on our MY06 and MY10 don't have the built-in mud trap (the ones I have on my trailer are 16" steelies - they also have the built-in mud trap).

For the sort of driving you love doing, you need to avoid ANY rim that doesn't "self-clean". The ones on ours are both shaped a bit like an inverted 'V' or 'U'. These tend to throw mud off; not just hold it there and go crazy out of balance ...

Otherwise, you have more choice of (reasonably legal) tyres with 15" than with 16" rims, just IMHO ...

ok for starters i would say there is more choice in the 15inch range of tyres from muddies to all terrains.
i believe the wrx rims have a difference offset??? so there fore with larger tyres more chance of rubbing.
but yes they do look better. maybe 16' forester rims?

e.g.

Bridgestone AT D694/LT

These can even be bought in legal sizes for the Forester with 15" rim size!

You cannot even come close to being legal with these in any 16" size ... :(

Stay with 15" would be my recommendation (taller sidewall; more floation when needed etc)

I'll 2nd that :iconwink:

Personally I'd stay with the 15", for three main reasons.
1: Easier to stay within the legal requirements.
2: You have a wider choice of tyre choices by staying with 15''
3: Less chance of rubbing etc, in particular if using a taller profile.

I'll see what I can do (later tonight) with your Forry & (those) wheels with a photo chop too mate.

These are actually MY00 WRX rims and the lightest ever used on any large production Subi but they have 5mm less offset so more chance of the tyre rubbing on the strut, personally I'd find a cheap set of 15" rally tyres for things like the power lines and shove them on your steelies then get a set of 15 or 16" alloys for normal road/sand/beach work but make sure they are off a Foz or Outback for the better offset.

Here you go taza :)
Not the best photo chop I've ever done, but it should give you an idea of what they would look like on your Forry :iconwink:

more info here Taza, but agree you should stay with 15s. I was given a set of stock 15s a while back for free but they didn't fit the bigger XT brakes so I gave them away. hunt around the forums/classifieds you could get lucky too. If you want to look different you can always paint them hot pink ;)

They do look good. Price is certainly right!! Is he really only asking $200 for the set (4 or 5?)? That's almost like stealing! I paid $190 for just one that matched the OEM rims on Roo2 at the wrecker ... :(.

None of the alloys appear to have the built-in mud trap that the steelies have. Actually, just had a look at the ones on my trailer. The 'spoked' design fitted to the cars have the mud trap; the el-cheapo plain black spare rim that came with Roo2 as OEM is a 'normal' shaped rim, with no mud trap! Go figure ....

I still reckon that Taza is better off staying with 15" rims for the kind of driving he loves doing. What do you reckon?

i agree i have the 16's from the forester gt on my car and i am planning on going back to my old 15's when my current tyres wear out, there is just no choice. to be legal the only off road tyre i can buy is the yoko geolander

the stock 15s steelies will not fit the fronts of your 04 XS unless you get happy with an angle grinder on the brake calipers

Agreed, I've tried them. Not much metal needs to be removed though. Less than 1mm and they would clear.

Agreed too, had I given it more thought I would have stuck with the 15's that were on mine when I bought it, I just put Corrie's up as they were so cheap and Taz may have his heart set on a set of 16's .......... though I'd avoid steelies because of the unsprung weight.

Alright thanks for the opinions guys. Much appreciated, I guess I should take the benefit of being able to fit 15" rims and stick with them. The stock steelies are just abit plain and boring to me, especially now they are rusting and the paint job looks like glued Milo on them  It seriously does except grey, not even silver :rolleyessarcastic: :(

Oh and thanks Mr T for your work, they came out great and gave me a good idea of what it would look like. I might hit you up again for doing a few more sometime if you don't mind..?

Corry from PWRX has these 01 GT 16" Foz mags up for 200 with crappy tyres, he's up in Hocking.

Thanks D-Gen but they don't really look that offroady...

I looked at prices of tyres too for my 15's. $230 a tyre for 215/70R15 which is what I have but I'm not super keen to get them again. I was also looking at Hankook's, BFG's and a few others. I'm keen to stay with all terrains as muddy's aren't the best for sand, considering us sandgropers here in WA mainly have that.

I was looking mainly at BFG's for the good offroad ability and long wear life. I was quoted at over $300 a tyre at a few joints and wasn't too keen to pay that but found a place that will sell me the BFG T/A All Terrain in a 215/75R15 for $265 each, balanced and fitted. He said if I buy 5 I can get a free wheel alignment too so I think I will be going with them

I will stay with the stock 15's for now but might get some lighter 15" rims later on and swap my BFG's over. I am slightly concerned though about the weight of both the steel rims and the light truck BFG's affecting performance and economy in a big way. Anyone had any experience with this?

The BFG's weigh 32lbs while the Geo's are 26lbs and the steelies are somewhere around 25lbs each! Just don't want to make the little 2.0l gutless again becuase as it is now it goes great and has heaps of power for my needs.

With other rims though I was looking at some of these... What do people think? I can get them in 15". They aren't too bright or attention drawing but would set the car apart from the stock'ies.. Plus I was thinking either black, silver or gun metal grey

You are are young and fit ...
Elbow grease and paint are MUCH cheaper than new rims ... :poke: :rotfl:

Make certain that he chucks in a proper alignment check: front caster, camber, toe-in/toe-out; rear caster and toe-in/toe-out; overall vehicle alignment check. AND a proper report on what was where; and where it is now ...

Also consider that it costs dough to shift tyres from one set of rims to another ... I was quoted between $20~35 a tyre to re-fit and balance only! Now that's bloody gouging IMNSHO :(!!

The weight of tyres/rims is important, but more because of the increase in unsprung weight than any loss of power from the extra inertia, IMHO.

I like to get things right the first time; better than chopping and changing later, as tends to get expensive. So I tend to think things through carefully before jumping into the very hot water ... :lildevil: :rotfl:

Done it twice but it doesn't come out aswell as a profession job. Plus the rust keeps coming back on them :(

Yes I know, I just don't want it to run like a POS again as now it actually goes pretty darn well

I always think things through before buying something for example. But I do like other people opinions and to look at all my options/solutions/choices.
