I was watching a doco on Ferrari F1 the other day when they mentioned a Ferrari 3.0L Flat 12 Boxer engine! :lildevil:

My jaw dropped!

Thats right...Ferrari F1 designed, built & used a boxer engine. Not just any boxer engine but a 3.0L 12 cylinder boxer...a 3.0L H12 :lildevil:

I reckon that would give Venom & Dulagarl a run for their money :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Engine (1970):

fer312b2.jpg
Designation: Type 001
Type: Rear-mounted. 180° V12, light alloy cylinder block and head, aluminium wet liners, 112 mm connecting rods, water cooled
Bore & Stroke: 78.5 x 51.5 mm
Unitary and Total Displacement: 249.25/2,991.01 cc
Compression Ratio: 11.8:1
Max. Power Output: 460 bhp at 12,000 rpm
Timing Gear: 4 valves per cylinder, 2 overhead camshafts per cylinder bank driven be gears off the back of the engine
Fuel Feed: Lucas indirect injection
Ignition: Single plug, distributor, coil and Dinoplex electronic capacitive discharge
Lubrication System: Dry sump with radiator

Thats right...460bhp at 12,000rpm!!! :monkeydance:
Not bad for 1970!

By the end of development a decade later, it had reached 515 bhp at 12,300 rpm, partly due to the short stroke:

Engine (1979):

Engine: Type 015, rear-mounted 180° V12, light alloy cylinder block and head, aluminium wet liners, 112 mm connecting rods, water cooled
Bore & Stroke: 80 x 49.6 mm
Unitary and Total Displacement: 249.3168/2,991.801 cc
Compression Ratio: 11.5:1
Max. Power Output: 515 bhp at 12,300 rpm
Timing Gear: 4 valves per cylinder, 2 camshafts per cylinder bank, gear driven off the rear of the engine
Fuel Feed: Lucas indirect injection
Ignition: Single plug with coil-ignition and Marelli Dinoplex electronic capacitive discharge
Lubrication System: Dry sump

H12 in a Forester....

^ Now thats what I need in my Forester! Should be torquey enough for my needs I think :D
Yeah, should be ok for the time being :iconwink:
At least until you can get something a little bigger anyway

Wonder if I could throw and L-Series gearbox behind it  :shake:
I can't see why not

H12 in a Forester.... and why not slap on a few STI turbos and a supercharger while we are throwing money away   :lildevil:

hell yeah...how bout quad sequential turbos with a supercharger for low down torque :lildevil::rock::monkeydance:

Carlo Chiti, creator of the flat 12...

Thy ended up scrapping it due to massive problems with the engine :( But it did make more power than the Ferrari Flat 12 ;)

I'm pinning the issue on the rubber band that's timing the cam belts

Ah yeah, maybe... but if you know anything about engine construction there's a reason why the power is made up at the 12G mark. I doubt we have a low range that's low enough to actually crawl with those revs!

Best of luck with paying for the fuel bill too!
