Hey guys . ive got to change my head gaskets. ive got a little bit of oil in my overflow tank. and on the rad cap... it runs fine but is blowing smoke . just not sure if its the car or the 2 degrees outside lol.... it has a new tstat.radiator.waterpump.hoses.spark plugs. oil filter and i just did a service . flushed it with warm water and im running coolant and 15w40 penrite oil. Its a 1996 subaru outback ej25 Ive looked on offroad subarus and the diy idea seems pretty good not having to remove the engine ... Has anyone done the head gaskets themselves ????

I did a full engine rebuild on my Forester and my RS Liberty. Remove the engines both times. Engines go in and out piece of cake. There is a great head gasket tutorial over on the rs25 forums. Plenty of pictures.

cheers

Thanks heaps mate . ive only ever rebuilt a jackeroo and a datsun 200b lol

Whats the rs25 forum. ? One main thing i need to figure out is if i really need to get the heads machined . kinda dont have the cash atm. and ive onlu just done a servive on the car
it runs great even with the leak in the cooling

Hey mate, the sort term fix is ChemiWeld. You can get it from most car stores, tents to work well. Just follow the instructions. Make sure you wash out the cooling system (radiator) after so it doesn't block it and cause more over heating issues.

1996 OB (Model Year '97) have twin overhead cams on each head (assuming it is the original motor); this makes it at least extremely difficult to do the gaskets without removing the engine. Later ej25 with single cam had lots more room. I would remove the engine.

Sorry guys should give u some info.

1996 outback ej25 original engine .NA . 240.000km . servive history is really good . new waterpump and belts in 2011 . New radiator sparks.oil . filters and leads.tstat last month .

Ive been warned about the additives in the engine . i would rather find a easy way to replace the gaskets . so i know its all fine . would be doing both too so i do it once

Do yourself a favour, get a hoist and a stand and pull the motor and do the heads, belts, and seals at the same time. Assuming you get the parts before hand it's a cruisy weekend job.

G'day briangardphoto & :welcome: to ORS.

Sorry I can't be of any help on your head gasket issues
They're a little beyond what I'm prepared & capable of doing :)

Yes I have to admit I've broken a few (actually more than a few) things on my Forry  :poke:  but most of the time it's been while I've been having fun in the great outdoors :p
But touch wood, I haven''t done a head gasket yet :)
