Does anyone have any experience with coilovers?

1. Is anyone aware of any with a longer fully extended length to stock?

2. If I was to blow soy a damper what is involved in rebuilding and what would it cost?

3. How could I access the camber adjustment if combined with lift blocks?

Thanks guys.

Hey ST

On which page of the Karma Sutra is the subject of 'coilovers' discussed, mate ... :lildevil:

I think I'd better leave it there ... :rotfl:

There are plenty of coli overs on the market. Most are cheap rubbish. Good ones cost a lot of money. You may wish to speak to people like Heasemans- they are based in Sydney. With coil overs, you may not need lift blocks- they can tell you this I suspect. My own experience was with some in the rally car. They were noisy and not at all comfortable, but then they were only mid range

The two most promising options so far are:

Pedders extreme coilovers @$1600 - I'm going to go and take some measurements on Wednesday.

PB coilovers aka phatboy @$880 - made in Taiwan. Still in discussion with the manufacturer. But appear to be able to raise and be rebuilt. Extra $75 gets pillow ball/camber plates.

Still early days but looks promising.

coil overs also usually have a much smaller spring seat might give clearence also for much bigger tyres?

They sure do. Although at the point where the tyres would hit the spring perch, the tyres are already rubbing on the footwell and subframe.

Well I went down to my local pedders today and they begrudgingly allowed me to take overall measurements of the coilovers.

From the tophat to the centre of the lower bolt hole at max recommended extension:

Front - 530mm

Rear - 640mm

They could be wound out further but they didn't recommend it.

Camber plates add $285 per pair.

Does anyone have a set of struts lying around that they can measure?

I found the reply email from Dan the CEO of PB Coilovers in my email junk folder - luckily.

For the first time in my quest for information I received no bull**** answers with exact specifications and he actually started questioning me about my application so he could tailor make a set to suit.

I've requested 65mm lift to 25mm drop. I would run a modest rideheight day to day to preserve cv joints and be legal and just wind up the sus as was required.

Spring rates front and rear are 8 and 5kg respectively but he said he can supply whatever I want.

Did he give you an indication of price for the custom made ones?

A bit of a setback on the coilover front:

The forester kit can't be raised above stock due to the lengths of the dampers and pistons available. I'm still talking with Dan about a solution, perhaps teaming them with some of Sumo Parts lift blocks.

I think you're right garretG, you would have to extend the shock body (essentially a strut bottom lift) because the adjustment on the ground control looks more like preload adjustment than ride height adjustment to me. I'm no suspension expert and could well be wrong though.

Yalla those hotbits look like the goods. Not a lot of info though. Pricing seems reasonable, I wonder what the quality is like.
