Blue Fox 2.0 - 2005 FXT

Blue Fox Journal 2.0

Yes, unless you frequent SubaruForester.org often, then you heard correctly. Blue Fox 2.0, the (new to me) 2005 Subaru Forester XT 5-Speed to replace my 2004 XT.

I know I haven't posted here in quite some time, and major apologies for that. It's been a rather hectic time over the past few months. First, the bankruptcy, moving out of state........and of course........the crash.

So I guess I should start with the crash, being that's the reason why there is the Foz 2.0 in the first place. Without typing out the whole thing and making this post a million words long, below is the link to the SF.org thread I started for it.....

https://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f98/no-more-foz-105107/

And the images below paraphrase what happened decently enough:

So after the crash, I ended up buying a 2005 Forester XT 5-Speed that I found up in Vail, Colorado. I'll just say, in January, finding a decent Fozzy for sale is rather difficult.

Modifications for the 2005 XT have started rather briskly as I already knew the exact direction I wanted to go (which was the same direction as my previous XT)......RallyCross. I wanted an off-road rally car as a daily driver, so that's what she'll become. The previous model was close......I plan on getting this one closer (and competing in it).

A little about the car....I found an ad in Craigslist for it. I talked with the owner and decided he was a stand up guy and flew from southern New Mexico to Denver, Colorado, then drove 2 hours to Vail, Colorado to check it out. I was in love with it within the first few miles. Talked with the owner who said he wanted it to go to a good owner who would look after it. I told him she would be famous. Two hours later, I was driving back from Vail in my newly purchased 2005 XT. Before starting the long drive back to New Mexico, I stopped off in Boulder to pickup a set of steel wheels and tires (215/70 R16 BFGoodrich All-Terrains) from another forum member.

I've had the car for a few weeks now and couldn't be happier. LOVING the 5-speed over the 4EAT, though I haven't put the car through any serious "crawling" as I did in my old XT, but I've taken it off road a few times, and it's impressed me a lot so far. (the more 50/50 power split is fun compared with the FWD biased 4EAT).

Below is a picture taken of the car about a week after I brought her home with the new BFGoodrich tires and black powder coated steel wheels, along with a freshly painted grille.

01.18.12 - Grille Black-Out

First modification was to paint the horrible chrome on the grille. I've never liked chrome trim on anything, and the grille was no exception. I picked up a couple cans of Duplicolor "Trim Paint" in satin black. I've used this paint before on many occasions on my previous 04 and the paint holds up very well and is easy to work with.

First, needed to sand the grille. I used a sanding pad just to scuff up the surface. I kept the grille on the car for sanding as it is much easier this way. Just make sure to tape around the grille so you don't scuff your paint.

Next, I shot a couple thin coats of black filler primer, then a few thin coats of the trim paint. While I was at it, I decided to paint the center caps for the steel wheels black as well. I believe the car looks so much more aggressive and sporty wearing the black grille.

02.09.12 - Roof Rail Black-Out

Decided that since I never got around to painting the silver roof rails on my 04 black, I would do it right away on the 05. I ordered a replacement roof basket, so I wanted to get the roof rails painted before the basket arrived. I used the same Duplicolor Trim Paint I used on the grille for the rails. Taped everything off, used a sanding pad to scuff up all the paint, and then laid down newspaper for overspray. Sprayed a few coats of black primer, then a few coats of trim paint. I think it turned out perfect, and couldn't ask for anything better.

I was originally going to cover the rails in satin black vinyl, but for some reason, I just don't have the patience to deal with vinyl anymore, but for some reason painting doesn't get to me. So painting it was.

I let the paint cure for 2 days in the sun before attempting to mount the cross bars so the basket could be attached.

02.11.12 - Rola Roof Basket Mounted

Re-purchased another Rola Vortex Roof Basket from eTrailer. $170 shipped, and it's a phenomenally well built basket and has a lower profile than the other baskets on the market. I believe the lower profile fits the car better as the larger baskets look a little out of proportion. Once the paint was cured from the freshly painted roof rails, I mounted the cross bars and then mounted the basket. Everyone who saw the new car kept telling me "It needs a basket, looks naked without one." The basket also adds to the aggressiveness.

Just need to get me another BFGoodrich All-Terrain tire to mount up there as well. Already have a fifth wheel to mount it to.

03.14.12 - Pics in Ouray

Took a couple of pictures in Ouray, Colorado for my first, and last Ice Climbing trip of the season. Being I was in pretty banged up shape after the crash (and still kind of am), I decided to go the last weekend before the ice melt. Glad I did, it was awesome!

So after that trip, I decided that I would do anything I could to move up to Colorado. I always wanted to, but now, I was motivated. I hated NM even more now because of the crash. So I found a few companies to apply to........was interviewed, and a couple weeks later, I was told that I got the job, and that I would start on April 30, 2012! WOOOOOOOHOOOOO!

So, this starts another another story........and this one SUCKS!

04.05.12 - Just My Luck!

Thread from SF.org:

https://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f88/just-my-luck-111138/

So yeah, I accepted the new job in Colorado, and I was supposed to start in 25 days. And now this happens:

Quoted from that thread:

Developed a misfire, literally out of nowhere. The car has been running perfect and hasn't missed a beat since I got it. Was driving home a couple days ago from work, and once I pulled up to a stop light, there was a rough idle, several minutes later the CEL came up. Misfire on Cylinder 4.

"No, couldn't be the same thing, has to be a plug" I thought to myself.

Well, I spent $60 on new plugs, (and found out the wrong plugs were in the car to begin with). Swapped them in and it still misfired. Swapped out coil packs, misfire continues. Frustrated and exhausted......I plug in the compression check valve and hope for the best.........oh f**k.

Cylinder 1: 118 PSI
Cylinder 2: 118 PSI
Cylinder 3: 118 PSI
Cylinder 4: 27 PSI

Yeah. At first, I didn't believe it because that's the first cylinder I checked.

"No, I must have done it wrong, there's no freaking way I'm that unlucky."

But no. I checked all the cylinders twice, results are all the same. I'm truly gutted. I'm moving to Durango, Colorado in a couple of weeks, SHOULD have been up there today looking for a place to live........but no, I'm stuck with a crap motor in a vehicle I bought no less than 4 months ago. I can't believe I got shafted AGAIN just like I did with the last XT. Same exact symptoms, same exact outcome. At least this time, I know what I need to do to get it fixed. I won't be making a 4 month, $5500 mistake again. Still FREAKING sucks though. Oh, and for those of you who don't know, I went through this EXACT same situation with my last XT......you can read about that here if you'd like. It's horrific, I assure you:

So after I licked my wounds, I decided to stay up late and prep the motor as much as I could to be removed. I got most of it taken apart so far, Just need to disconnect the turbo from the down pipe, a couple hoses, as well as the starter and bolts connecting to the tranny. Oh joy. What luck I have.

So after that whole engine fiasco, I finally made it up to Durango, Colorado!!! SO awesome up here, I can't even stress it. Finally, I met my goal of getting the hell out of New Mexico, the land of EnCRAPment. lol.

Here's a few pics from a few days ago as the car looks now, and it's new environment! (Has an eerie resemblance to my old 04 model, no? lol!)

Looks terrific!

Real bummer about the engine. What caused/causes that problem?

Hope the new job and relocation are going well and suiting you even better :)

Great to hear that things are starting to look up for you in Colorado Blue Fox :raz:

Wow!!! Glad to have you back Blue Fox, glad you made it to CO, and here's to smoother sailing from here on out.:bananatoast:

I've been following your posts on sf.org mate. It's bad luck about your old Foz but atleast you all survived and you are back in another Forester :D

How is the snorkel coming along? With winter here now I'm definately ready for one!
I also sent you a PM on sf.org too :)

The snorkel, along with a few of my tools, are still back in New Mexico at my parents house with a few more of my things. I'll be picking them up at the end of the month. I'm living in a Condo right now with no real garage, but I'm only here until the end of August, and I'm hoping to get into a house by then. So we'll see. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to finish it too. It's been "almost done" for far too long.

Great work on the new ride Blue Fox!

OMG Blue Fox

I just read every word of your horror story here

And I thought that the Gods had it in for me!

I sincerely hope that you get your beautiful new Foz fixed up a bit more easily and quickly than that!

I have had a number of periods in my life like that; the stress does as much damage to one as the incident/s do to one's wallet ... :( :(

All the best with it mate. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Good to hear mate. No rush. Keep us updated :iconwink:

Thanks for posting a separate update on ORS, Blue Fox! It's a big relief to see you alive and kicking in CO after all you went through down in NM. Your black FXT was always an inspiration, and it's obvious that Blue Fox 2.0 will be an inspiration too!

Great to hear that you want the snorkel project finished as much as we do!

Great to see you back, seems like you have a bit of a bounce in your step again :iconwink:

Blue Fox 2.0 is looking great, cant wait to hear more of its build up
