Holy :censored:!
Very very nice vid mate. One of the best Youtube vids i've ever seen :iconwink:

Send that into Maxtrax. They might actually put it up on their website, or atleast a cut down version.

How did you put it all together, what software did you use mate?

Brilliant work, Ricker!

Just recently got two GoPros for a new project, and it's amazing what you can do with them. No wonder that few people bother with traditional video/handy-cams anymore. Now if only there was something like Stockton Beach here on the East Coast of the US. Maybe in the Outer Banks of North Carolina? Need to research this, especially after I get a lift on my Forester.

Could you please tell me all about that externally mounted video camera?

How do you control it?

Even more importantly, how much and where from ... ?

hey mate, that is indeed the type. Mine is the previous series and the newer ones got a serious bump up in quality do u'd be cheering with one of those. About $400 with a second battery and motor sport kit I believe. Bloody cheap for some good kit

Thanks Ricker

They are selling them for $367  with the sports kit.
As usual, the extra batteries are ridiculously expensive ... :(

How long does a fully charged battery run for?

What sort of storage does it use?

How do you control it from inside the car?

WOW!!! Fantastic video Ricker, incredibly well done. Don't just send it to Maxtrax, Subaru needs to see it too.

There is some wheelin' to be done on the north end of the outer banks (you can pick up an OBX sticker while you're there too:iconwink:), you might need to act fast though, I believe the trails are in jeopardy of being closed.

Agreed!

I know who im sending my raw footage to next time I want a good vid put together! I want to know how you did the begining bit where it had 'Ricker Productions' then went on to the garage and the foz...?

Thanks everyone for the thumbs ups on it! Makes me wanna make more :) I do get a kick out of making them quietly so its all good.

I sent my shorter version to maxtrax with pretty much just the maxtrax scene in it. Said they could use it on the website if they wanted. Guess we'll see if they do.

Firstly - is there a way to quote multiple people into the one post? so sorry for posting multiple times like this.

In regards to editing yours, haha I got multiple projects backing up I'd love to work on, so gonna have to leave those bad boys in your hands

In regards to the intro texts placed onto the garage door and wall, I use a program called Mocha, which ships with after effects CS4 up. Its whats called a planar tracking program, and allows me to make tracks of planes (though its rather good at any shaped object) and track in perspective. I then integrate that track data in a composition in after effects. And do the magic there using a corner pin effect. The text around the car was using rotoscoping in Mocha (essentially a highly adjustable mask) to cut out the shapes of the car and allow the text to display only where you'd normally see it, if it was actually behind the car. (bit fiddly but not to complicated)

I must admit I have a bit of an advantage in making vids, as its now my full time profession. Used to be an electrician but thought i'd try something else, and now I do editing and animation for a company that trains nursing staff in nursing homes

So as you can imagine, making video's about cars, hiking etc is a well earned pleasure!

Thanks Ricker

Hey ratbag,

Batteries are expensive, but well worth it as with most things you are always gonna need at least 2 if you plan on leaving a charging source for any length of time.

Storage is SD card - Which is excellent as their cheap chips

No controls from inside the car. Just stick on the car and line it up (I own the little screen accessory which helps compose the shot), hit record and your good to go.

Do note: that only the outside shots stuck to the car, were the go pro. For everything else I was using a "hacked" panasonic GH2, with a wide and a telephoto prime lens, which provides some very nice pics. Don't get me wrong the new Go Pro's are freaking insane quality for their robustness, size and price and produce very beautiful pictures. Just maybe not as beautiful as a DSLR on steroids.

wow i think that is the best offroad subaru video i have seen, i think subaru will want to use it for an add.
how do you find the geolanders?
how you find the lack of low range?

Ok and lastly, geolanders were great! Reckon I could of dropped them another 5 psi, but was a little concerned about rolling off the rims/destroying the rims, due to my driving habits when getting adventurous.

The lack of low range wasn't a problem. I've had the car tuned so its got an extra 40nm of torque, and bout 10-15kwasps more at the wheels, and it the torque comes in about 400rpm earlier at around 2200, so it really doesn't struggle if you can keep it above that.

I have attempted some very steep and bumpy dirt tracks before, that I wasnt able to climb, due to the fact I couldnt gun it due to large tree roots, this meant i'd have to be going very slow to get over the roots on a very steep incline. And I didnt want to crucify the clutch which is the only choice if you choose to overcome it.
SO thats about the only situation I can see where you'll have issues with no low range/but more realistically with it just being a manual.

Thanks Ricker

Hey ratbag,

Batteries are expensive, but well worth it as with most things you are always gonna need at least 2 if you plan on leaving a charging source for any length of time.

I have two each for each of my 3 cameras ... Plus 3 mains chargers and 1 that is a car charger as well.

Pray tell, how much does the little screen cost? :iconwink:

I know about the four thirds sensors.
I own E-1, E-510 and E-30 Olympus dSLRs with a fairly wide assortment of lenses from the awesome 7~14 up to the pretty flaming wonderful 50~200 ...

One way and another, my photography and associated computer gear and s/w is probably worth more than my car/s ...

I was joking mate you don't have to make me any vids. Really well put together though
Fair enough, it being your fulltime job would help :iconwink: I study and work in IT but im useless when it comes to being creative, the only thing I can do is use CAD designing programs
I know Mocha, never used it but have seen many awesome things done with it!
