Looking at steelies or aluminum

Forester spoke steel are appealing with a black powder coat. More durable in the styx...I've had two alum wheels break...hitting rocks..

Forged alum wheels are bomber like a rally wheel "team dynamics" $$$
th

let's see some wheels out there...

Given we have small tires to wrap them with I prefer steel.. rust is not an issue ...I wash them regularly in potholes....streams, etc..lol

Main problem with the steelies is that they have a built-in mud trap that can cause serious out of balance issues until you get them cleaned out.

e.g. NL's piccy here of one of his after the Gentle Annie 'taming':

See his comments about this issue in that thread also.

I have these for my trailer, where it doesn't matter a stuff.
But the alloys just shed mud naturally because of their shape.

e.g. Mine after the Phasmid Track:

And the morning after, once I had driven home:

No cleaning of any description done ... :iconwink:

I myself have just bought a set of early (99 to approx 2002) Audi A3 rims. PCD 5x100, 15x6, ET +35.

They looks like a steel rim, but are actually alloy. They look very very solid. Talking to the blokes at Tyrepower they commented they won't be forged, which is good, becuase forged alloy shatters whereas these will have some give and came be repaired.

Same as the Audi rims mentioned here: https://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?p=280556

After this video- at the time the car was running MY99 WRX rims-the wheels were so far out of balance I was battling to do 100km/h. Too much mud will cause issues eventually.

Those Audi wheels look fantastic, Venom, especially once painted white in typical rally style. One day I will trade my ungainly LLBean alloys for white rally wheels. One day... :)

mud /snow build up ...out of balance reguardless of wheel type...
No wheel I've seen yet cleans itself out ..I just grab a stick or scraper and clean them out..Wooden spoons work the best.

Even our rally car has built in mudscrapers...we still have to pull them off and clean them in service....!

Now, about offset:

I have 15 inch OEM steelies at the moment. I think the specs are:

PCD: 5x100
Offset: 48 mm

I have an option on some alloys: I think the specs for them are:

PCD: 5x100
Offset: 55 mm.

I understand offset to mean the distance between the centreline of the wheel and the plane of the hub-mounting surface. Therefore, with the 55 mm offset, the inside of the rim will be 7 mm closer to the strut than the steel wheel with 48 mm offset.

1. am I right?
2. Is this too close to the strut?
3. will spacers solve this?

3. will spacers solve this?

No.
As I understand it, banned for all passenger vehicles under the ADRs, regardless of what your local auto parts shop tells you ... (mine told me that this was not the case ... Ha! Must have been reading some other version of the ADRs other than the ones the government publishes on their web site/s ... ).

Thanks all. Questions answered. NL: the rims look the same as your new ones, and I think they are 55 offset. Given my tyres I'll go for a different offset.

I love the look of them & they are much lighter than the steelies but the offset sucks! :puke:

15x7" et40 oz racing
These fit nice and clear 4pot and 2pot brakes

I haven't got them on the Foz yet as I've had a few set backs in the last couple months -
Issues with the replacement strut/springs - nearly sorted
Smashed my work ute had to drive Foz - ute now back on the road
Broke my left ankle - still broken and plastered

So once this is sorted it'll be all go on the Foz !!

I got the wheels in from Japan thru import monster - cost about $500 landed from memory

The needed a slight lip taken off the centre bore to fit the suby hubs.
They are an early toyota celica fitment I think ? :D
