Just back from another trip, only 2700km this time, and mostly on sealed roads. From Melbourne down through Gippsland to Buchan, then via the Snowy River NP through to Jindabyne. Then through Kosci NP to Blue Mountains NP, where I did all the touristy stuff around Katoomba. On to Lithgow, Newnes and Wollemi NP, then headed west to Bathurst to do a couple of laps, then out to Parkes to checkout the dish. Back to Melbourne via the Newell highway. This trip ticked a lot of boxes for me, but one of the unexpected highlights was the old rail tunnel in Wollemi NP. A few pics attached...

Wonderful tunnel shots mate.

That's the home of the famous Woolemi Pine, I take it?

Sounds like a very nice trip :).

So was there light at the end of the tunnel??

Nice photos, but with all those places visited, I'm hoping we'll see some more on a longer trip report??

I went to The Dish this summer on my way back from QLD and i thought it was a great stop-over. Glad I went there!

Pedro.

Great pics mate! Sounds like a great trip!

Nice pics! Did you go to the glow worm tunnel (another disused rail tunnel on the same line)?

I'm going to Newnes this weekend, a ghost town at the other end of that disused rail line. Because of the steepness of the line from the valley below, a 12 wheel drive locomotive was used when Newnes was a shale-oil mining town.

No actually. The tunnel curves around a bend, so you can't see the end until you're almost at the exit. It's pretty dark for most of it.

Well, I have lots more photos, but they're typical tourist stuff, Blue Mountains views, waterfalls etc. Not really related to off-roading at all. The only non-sealed sections were from Buchan to Jindy, and in Wollemi NP, where I found the tunnel.

Yes, the whole reason I went along that track was to see the glow worm tunnel. I didn't know about the tunnel you drive through, I would have been quite happy just to see the glow worms, getting to drive through a different tunnel was an unexpected bonus.

Here's the glow worm tunnel:

And some glowing worms:

awesome glow worms are fantastic have seen them only a few time once in tassie in some caves then in cape otway

They are actually the larvae of a flying gnat, and resemble a small caterpillar. They build a "nest" from silk and use their glowing tip to attract food. Here's a (not-so-good) shot of one.
