The story bout the Pajero really hits a note. Not just for the fact its a big fourbie, but the road rage with 2 young kids in the car! I find that so disgusting :(:shake::huh:

There certainly is something bout the big fourbies that attract a certain type of aggressive person who is uncaring bout basic decency and respect. Just the other day I saw 3 different 4x4s use aggressive, intimidatory driving tactics in a single 1hr drive home.

Until driver attitudes are effectively addressed, not much will change :(

And me too ...

This is in keeping with a lot of my own experience also.

Until driver attitudes are effectively addressed, not much will change :(

Quite. As the article says:

"All this happened on the Geelong bypass, a modern road engineered to be the safest highway in Victoria but no one has yet invented an idiot-proof stretch of bitumen."

I think the final paragraphs of that article says most of what needs to be said {emphasis added by RB}:

"While there are no laws about being a moron, there are ones about how to drive, and police would love the courts to back them in crackdowns particularly on unlicensed drivers.

Most of these kids grow out of it. Some don't get the chance. Sometimes they are just boys who make dumb decisions, risking not only their own lives but those of friends and strangers. "They are risk-takers who don't understand the consequences of their actions," Smith says.

Nor are they all young men. There was the woman who hid an underlying medical condition to get her licence. She had mini blackouts. Most lasted only a few seconds but on the road that can be a lifetime. She clipped a car and veered off the road, killing a child.

"Mostly they are not bad people. They just do bad things," says Smith.

"They are full of remorse, say they made a terrible mistake and want to go home, and we have to say, 'No, you can't, you've killed someone'."

One option they had was to use their mobile phone and ring 000. I think it would help if people had an action plan- what to do if a, b or c happened. It is the same as any other part of driving- what are my options? Stay in the car, keep the windows up. I was once surrounded by a mob of drunken yobbos at Mt Panorama. They appeared very aggressive and I had decided that if they attacked me or the car I would run them over and not stop till I got to Bathurst police station. Fortunately, I also had another plan which did the trick and they lived to drink another day. It also served to increase my contempt for drunken behaviour, but that is another topic.

I've finally had a chance to read that article.
There are some very sad & disturbing parts in there.

I not only find that disgusting, but also criminal !!

Sad, but true unfortunately.

I was near to tears after reading it.
What's wrong with our species?

I not only find that disgusting, but also criminal !!

Quite.

Bad enough to ignore the Road Rules;
Behave like complete thugs;

BUT with their kids in the car!! AND not even properly restrained ...

BUT FOR their kids, I would jail them both immediately.

That road rage part with the pajero was just STUPID.

However one part of that article:

Nor, clearly, were they particularly religious, having sworn off the traditional Good Friday fresh fish lunch for a feed of pre-cooked dim-sims from a nearby service station.

How the HELL is that relevant???!! VERY poor form that.

As a DPA (Devout Practising Atheist ... ), I also thought it was very poor reporting. Really stuck in my craw too.

Anyway, one should not let one person's arrant prejudices in an irrelevant comment detract from the other unrelated aspects of the article, IMHO.
