IN non western countries driving is so dangerous that many drivers now have dash cams. People are just such poor drivers, drunk, careless or criminal it is the only way drivers can protect themselves.

On a side note, the United States just recorded the lowest traffic fatalitities since 1949, which predates the interstate highway system. Cars and driving has gotten much safer, assuming th other driver knows how to drive.

Most of these are Russian videos.

The m/c ones made me flinch.

Not enjoyable to watch but a good reminder of ones mortality.

Quite. Almost all of them caused by ignoring sensible road use, impatience or loss of control of vehicle ...

In the US, as it has been here, the two single greatest causes of the road toll being lowered have been better car design (particularly being less likely to roll in a prang, but also better brakes and steering), and the fitting and wearing of seatbelts.

Hard to control a car if you are not sitting behind the steering wheel; and hard to survive a crash if you are 20 feet up the nearest tree after it ...

This video (and ones like it) should be compulsory viewing for every new driver, no matter what age.

When i took drivers ed (won't say when but a majority of cars were rear wheel drive) they did have the required gore movies, mostly from the 50's and 60's, before seat belts and crush zones. They were gory, and sort of a joke. they still are a running joke here, especially since they were in black and white. Dash cams are far more realistic as they speak for themselves.

There were about four there that i saw that could not have had happy endings.

LOL!
I got my driver's licence in 1964 ...

At least, mate :(.

My driving instructor said to me that if he didn't teach me to handle a car properly, I would kill myself within a year. He was almost certainly right.

They had just finished building the Centenary Bridge at Jindalee in Brisbane at this stage, with a muddy paddock at the other end of it. He took me out there and taught me the basics of skid control ... That was in an Isuzu Bellett.

Many's the time that basic training has saved me, and others ...

Drivers ed here in the states (if the school even has the $$ to offer it) is usually done in the summer, which is the worst weather (easiest) to learn to drive in.

There are no graduated licenses. There is no real skid control or accident avoidance training unless your in a farm area. Then usually you have learned it on your own in a field.

The scary thing is that the most basic car back then was hard pressed for 100 HP, or a VW with 40-60 hp. Cars today start at 150 hp and all capable of over 110 mph with decent acceleration.

Here we have lost so many kids to high school graduation presents of mustangs or bmw's it is tragic. Parents are partially to blame for this too, but really it comes to lack of training.

Cars have gotten safer, people havent.

Spot on. The Germans appear to be leading the way with this sort of thing. Learning to drive in bad weather and at high speed. You could see most of those accidents were going to happen. Parents are definitely blame worthy. Spoilt little brats given fast toys- maybe after a big tanty, and no responsibility anywhere.

When I sat my learners licence test, I got a few questions wrong but still good enough to pass. I asked the examiner which questions I got wrong and what the correct answers where and they said they couldn't tell me!

Massive lack of duty of care letting people out on the road not knowing the rules. I hope (but doubt) this has now changed.

There were a couple that made me jump I must say. Especially at 1min-50sec & 6min-10sec

Almost all of them caused by ignoring sensible road use, impatience or loss of control of vehicle ...
That is so very true :(
I must admit though, the one at about the 10min-20sec mark was a great save I must say :)

The drivers that really p!ss me off though, & I see it every day, are the ones using mobile phones.
In particular, the ones trying to text & drive at the same time :furious: :mob: :furious:

I don't know how many times I've said it to myself (I've lost count)
But I must admit I have occasionally yelled out "get off the :censored: phone & drive" at them too (usually when the lights change to green & they just sit there) :yell:

Sorry guys & rant over, but it is one of my pet hates.

Regards
Mr Turbo
