This isn't really a trip report, more of an update on the state of Cooloola Way in the north of the Sunshine Coast. I headed up to Rainbow Beach this way over the Easter break. I'd heard it was bad but couldn't find any details anywhere as to whether a Forester could make it intact. I have a stock MY10 Forester XS with no underbody protection and bog standard Yokohama Geolanders.

Even though it was raining most of the way up, it turns out the track isn't too bad. It's rough and teeth rattling for the majority of the way with a few washed out sections and fallen trees. It's officially closed and there are Road closed signs up by the Harry Hut turnoff and at the Rainbow Beach Road end to warn you away from it. Until last year it would take the same amount of time as going via the Bruce Highway. It takes longer these days but it's a lot more interesting and I believe safer than that insane highway.

I last took it in April last year and it was a lot worse (or better?), with long water crossings and deep muddy sections. This time the water crossing was pretty shallow and quite short and most of the muddy sections had dried out.

There was only one section that I couldn't get through. I had a few goes (see the pics) but I was slipping around so much near the end and the ruts were so deep that I wasn't going to risk underbody damage. I travelled up with two Land Rover Discovery 4s and even with all terrain tyres, one slipped off a ridge at the end and bottomed out. I eventually reversed out of trouble and took a "chicken run" around it, though I still managed to scrape the underside a couple of times much to the "delight" of my other half who prefers the car to sit in the garage with gleaming paintwork! Note that the D4 was the only vehicle to get through. A variety of Prados and Pajeros came through and all took the easy route.

Welcome Smokebelch.
Nothing wrong with a 'chicken run', in this context...
However, 'road closed' signs could result in all types of cr@p if something goes 'pear' shaped...

G'day Smokebelch & :welcome: to ORS.
It sure does look nice & slippery there.
There's nothing wrong with taking the chicken track either :iconwink: It's better to be safe than sorry I say :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

Yes, I was going to add that in conclusion don't expect the RACQ to come and tow you home if it does go pear shaped.

I believe that it's a traffic offence to drive on a gazetted road that's been closed. There's always a fair amount of traffic on the Cooloola Way though so no one's listening!

Thanks for the welcome. I've been around for a while. First post though.

The downside is definitely my tyres. I always find that when there's a lot of clay that the tyres effectively become "slicks" and hence the drive can be quite unpredictable. I can be going along quite nicely then all of a sudden I lose control and start sliding around. Hence I always goes through any water that I see to try and rinse the clay off, or pull over and start picking the clay out with a stick.

The Yokohamas seem to be lasting quite well. I've done 67000km on the one set. When it's time to replace them I was thinking of the Cooper CS4s. It's 90% a road car so I don't want to be fitting anything that's going to affect the wifes drive to work each day!

I went to Rainbow beach/DI a few months ago in my L and the website said the beach from Rainbow beach township to Leisha track was impassable.... LIES! sure there was some debris from fallen trees and what not, but I drove to the town from DI via Leisha track and back again AND have video to prove it! haha

I did the same back in January and this is what I came across at Middle Rock. Bloody Mitsubishis shouldn't be allowed on the beach!

We had a good laugh at this poor bloke then a few hours later I left it a bit late trying to leave the beach at the southern end of Inskip. The tide was right up and I had a hell of a time trying to get off the beach. I made it in the end but it got the adrenalin flowing

Unfortunately it comes down purely to complacency... getting too familiar with the things that are likely to bite you on the bum. It's good to find my boundaries though. I've been fairly lucky - fingers crossed - so far as I've got myself into a fair few sticky situations and the worst damage I've had is a couple of scratched up rims when I REALLY got stuck in the mud.
