My new tyre inflator.

I think my Chinese compressor stopped pumping properly last time I used it (haven't bothered to check it yet) but I've been trying to work out an easier way than taking it out of the box, opening bonnet, connecting to the battery then lugging it from tyre to tyre and I've come up with this, it's untested as of yet because we could only get 130psi out of his compressor and it'll safely hold 220psi.

Anyhow I spotted it in the Quokka a few weeks ago for $50, it'd been in there for ages but I rang and it was still available so offered $40 over the phone and he accepted so I drove 5min up the road & grabbed it.......a near new 4kg extinguisher.

I took it to Seagulls place tonight and he had all the bits needed to sort it out so here it is

As you can see by the condition it's perfect, the gauge shows low with 130psi.

We added a metal tyre valve for filling.

I had an old nozzle from my Landcruiser days and with a fitting Neil had it screwed straight onto the end of the original hose, it's no more bulky than the old compressor box and I'm going to ring a guy that re-conditions them to see how much air they will take safely but I'm hoping that with 220psi it should get me back up to at least 35psi in each tyre, no use for long trips but great for a day on the beach, I'll also keep 60psi in the spare so I can equalise the extinguisher to get a bit more pressure if needed, it works great using the original trigger and weighs bugger all. we went out to an industrial area before we started tonight and emptied it out the window as we were going along, some truckies must have thought I'd blown a piston lol. I'll grab a gauge to fit before the nozzel soon to make life easier. I can't remember what my compressors go up to so I may need to fill it up at a tyre shop or servo but not a huge problem, there's one just up the road and it'd be good for getting air into a tyre that needs re-beading....I think.
Opinions either way welcome.

Great idea - I hope no one tries to put out a fire with it! :rotfl:

Very cool, friend of mine uses a dive tank and can air up close to twelve 33/12.5/15.
Kevin makes a good point, maybe a cost of paint is in order.

Yeah I'm going to get some of that plastic wrap they make stickers out of to cover the majority of it, I thought about bringing it back to bare metal and clearing it but too much effort lol.

I'm heading to Lancelin on Tues for some video shoots so I'll give it a try then.

I'll let you all know how it goes, maybe a video haha.

Good thing is that it was so cheap & isn't going to break and only weighs 3.2kg all up........................Bad thing is I just went outside and checked both my compressors, they only go to 120 psi, I was sure 180 but haven't looked at them for years, nor really took that much notice when I did use them.

So I hope the servo has a bigger one but I'm sure even 120psi would be good enough to get an extra 10-12psi in each tyre which would get me pretty much anywhere without overheating the tyres, I guess I shouldn't be so bloody lazy and go see what it'll do lol.

Maybe later.

Now that would be embarrassing

What a top idea :raz:
Saves you having to lift the bonnet to hook everything up all the time

I also think a coat of paint is a good idea too :iconwink:

Yeah a mate of mine had an old scooba tank he used about 15yrs ago, he had a mount on the bullbar of his Troopie & swore by it but they are bloody heavy and expensive plus you need a mate or license to fill it, I thought of going to a hospital and pinching one of the nice little chrome oxy bottles they put on old people lol.

great idea
there's a 4.5kg on gumtree in east perth for $20...

Perfect, and I doubt they would rust inside because of the powder, might be a bit bigger than mine too, you could easily unscrew the hose and make an adapter to fill through there much easier, you'd probably find a compressor hose adapter that screwed straight in, just need to squeeze the trigger to let the air in then put the hose with tyre nozzle back on or a short length of compressor hose with the male adapter to click back on with nozzel on the other end..........Just thought of that then, much easier to do too.

Working pressure is 1500kpa which I converted to 217lb but that's with the gauge in the safe green area and 4 kg of dry powder in it, pretty sure 300 wouldn't be a problem especially with it being new, I was looking at gauges on eBay and just ordered a 60lb one from the States for $15 delivered which will go near the nozle end for checking what's in the tyres when I release the trigger and there were many 300lb gauges with the thread in the rear center like the one on it too, I just need to find the thread size before I buy one to replace it........No roof rack for this baby, it has a hook hole if you look so might hang it off a rear seat belt hoop, haven't got that far yet lol.

FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT FORGET IT

Absolute waste of time, I put 120psi in it with my compressor which is pretty much the best I'll be able to do as the local workshop only has 110psi, I would have been lucky to get 5psi in 3 tyres, just not enough volume so after altering hoses, letting tyres up-down etc etc I decided to throw it in the garden and shove 70psi in my spare and make a transfer hose, it was getting too dark so I'll test it in Lancelin tomorrow, pretty sure I'll get an extra 10psi in each tyre out of it.

My China spec tyre inflator has definitely died, still runs great but I can put my finger over the outlet and it's acting like an airless gun.....no back pressure but still blowing air so I'd say a blown O ring somewhere inside, I'll rip it apart and have a look.................One day.

So use it to hook it up to an AC compressor

Endless air baby!! (with storage)

Cheers

Bennie
