I am looking to get some new CHEAP rims that can get scratched and some AT tyres for a 2nd set. I currently have 215/65R16 tyres.
I thought any Rims, Forester and most Subaru, would fit but apparently not.

What do I need to know for Rims? And anyone have any cheap?
I was thinking of going Cooper tyres?

What size rims are you after?

For what purpose? What do you wish to achieve?

It is my understanding that all (modern) Suby rims use the same stud pattern and centre hole diameter.

By law, you have to use a tyre rated at the same as, or higher than, the compliance plate on your vehicle, and using anything else may void your insurance and/or warranty.

Also by law, the rolling radius of the wheel/tyre combination must be within the correct tolerances.

This site is our friend ...

Hit me up mate if you are interested in some Subaru Outback 17's, from a MY05. Since they have some cosmetic marks, I'm happy to sell cheap. I'm not sure if 17s will be the size you want for an offloading set, but they will fit your Forry (+48 offset, 5x100 etc). They currently have some Dunlop SP300E in 215/55/R17 on them. PM me if interested.

That is correct for the load rating, but as for the speed rating you are allowed to go lower.
Provided, that is, if you place a sticker on the bottom right hand side of the windscreen.
This sticker (which is orange in colour) is available from tyre outlets &/or the RTA (in NSW anyway, but not sure about other states though, so it's best to check first)

I have one on my windscreen & it reads....

"WARNING" This vehicle is fitted with tyres which have a lower speed rating than that specified on the tyre placard"

RTA VSI No 9

Im looking for a 2nd set of rims for offroad use only, well sept getting to and from the tracks.
I think 16" are more common for offraod tyres arent they?
Otherwise Id be interested anarchyok

The 16" rims on the MY09 are the same as for MY03-08 Foresters with 16" rims. 6.5x16JJ. It is just the tyre size that has changed.

Keep an eye on the wreckers. The base model Foresters all had steel rims, and they generally don't go for that much.

The offset on the Foresters is different from Liberties. Not sure about Outbacks.

Thanks for that correction.

In Victoria one does not (apparently) even have to have that ...
See the RACV article here, about half way down the page:

https://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/my+car/car+safety/safety+equipment/tyres

Mind you, I really cannot see that having an "S" rated tyre makes the car unsafe when the placard states that an "H" rated tyre is necessary ...

Where in Oz can one legally exceed 180 km/h ("S" speed rating ... )?.

Iv just received my new rims! 4 new steel Forester rims! Looking to buy another 2 and paint them all black! Do I just hand paint or should I get them done properly?
I want to put some OFF-ROAD tyres on them! Id like to try Coopers tyres again.
My current tyres are 215/65R16 Cooper CS4's.

So QU is...
Do I put bigger tyres on them?
Size?
Suggestions for which ones?
I have been told I would loose power and it might be illegal?

Those are identical to the ones I bought for my trailer project :iconwink:.

Just be warned that the steel rims have a 'mud trap' in them that can cause your wheels to be seriously out of balance after a wallow in the mud (just ask Nachaluva about his experience with this problem ... ). The alloys are an inverted 'V' shape that sheds mud.

The tyre size calculator I referred to upthread allows you to compare rolling circumference of tyre/rim combinations.

If you are planning to paint them, I would use spray enamel. Also try to keep the coats thin and even. This will give them greater resistance to damage, as well as avoiding any slight chance of an imbalance. Mainly they will look better cosmetically ... .

Personally, I reckon that the OEM finish is as tough as anything you can do, and will look fine on your car anyway. They look to be in "as new" condition from your photo.

I did consider dropping my rim size to 15" and running Bridgestone D694LTs, but the cost of changing rims and tyres became prohibitive - over $2,200. That's when getting a set of Yokohama 215/60 or 215/65 16" AT-s became a whole lot more attractive to me ...

As they're dedicated offroad tyres, I'd go as big as will fit. You have to clear the spring perch & not rub on the front on full lock.

Your tyres 215/65/16 are 686mm diameter or 27".
Not sure if 225/70/16 (722mm, 28.4") or 225/75/16 (744mm, 29.3") will fit but IMO the bigger the better :monkeydance:

You'll get more ground clearance, the tyres will balloon better for soft sand & should handle the rough stuff better too.

You can check sizes & how much it will affect your speedo here:

As for manufacturer, I like Yoki Geolander AT-s for their all round (on AND off road) ability, but consider BFG or Coopers for offroad.

225/70R16 should fit, they are almost 30inch!

Spring perch is really only an issue with our cars :(
But by doing a strut bottom lift (instead of doing lift blocks) will clearance that so its not an issue at all :iconwink:

My next tyres on the foz are going to be Geolander AT-S again but 215/75R15 but in light truck. You can only get them in light truck but they have over half an inch of tread :lildevil: will last ages and being quite big will spread pretty well for sand even being light truck :raspberry:

There is a set of original set of suspension for $100 just under syd Im thinking of getting to try this bottom strut lift idea of yours...
