I'm looking for a new project.
I like the bombproof ej22 and fuel mileage.

My plans are to lift 2" , all terrains, skidplates, rack, lights.
I like both rigs..
Options of a 4eat w/4.44 final drive in the forray sound perfect,(lsd swap rear).

I'm leaning towards the 98-99 forrays as they are cheap and easy to find .
The outback sports are harder to find .Most folks hang on to them ...(great fuel mileage).

Also have an h6 needing a rebuild..that would fit nicely in a forray...

Any thoughts or suggestions..appreciated

Cheers

I like the Outback Sport option. That's what I'm going to look for when it's time to get another Subie. I think my main reason for that is the EJ22, just don't want the 2.5 head gasket problems. Certainly more older Foresters out there to choose from, I hardly ever see the OB sports for sale around here.

headgaskets...

As far as headgaskets go the 97-2000 models w/ej25 were replaced under warranty and or done on pretty much any car with over 100k on it by now with the updated gaskets and they are really easy to do..

This stigma of HG failures is just making folks paranoid for nothing...I see a ton of subarus of that era on the road still. If it was such an issue they'd all be in the scrap yard...

I'm curious on usable space in the forray vs outback sport boot without folding seats down...

I must admit I'm part of the paranoid camp. There certainly are still plenty on the road.

Seems like you would probably have more useable space in the Foz, but I've never had a good look at the boot of an OBS.

If this is a project, then why not get a 2.5, rip the heads off and give them a bit of a tidy up- they may even need it. Get some new head gaskets, a 13mm head stud kit in lieu of bolts and then your problems are over.

The forray wins..

I've pretty much decided on the forray. Given they are easy to lift and aftermarket parts available.

I've decided on a 98-2001 S models , auto trans , 4:44.1 final drive, LSD,
good clearance and approach, departure angles.

My plans are a raised kings springs, 1" sutble solutions strut blocks.
Primitive skid plate front and rear. All terrains 235/75R15's If I can fit 'em in there.
Build a cargo basket(#3). Front custom bumper,winch , lights...fogs, overheads,
cb.

Future plans are to aquire 5spd d/r awd trans, H6 build and swap

Now that is going to be one awesome beast of a vehicle when its' completed

Regards

That's a clean lookin '98! I see they installed their own fog lamps ;)
An american H6 Foz is just what we need! Dulagarl reincarnated in America

Yeah, It's clean inside and out ..
Mind you not every clean lookin rig is up to par...!

I replaced two inner cv boots(front), replaced missing belt shrouds, had a missing trans nut at the right lower bellhousing !!!

Missing timing cover bolt and lower gasket around the water pump/timing cover!
missing battery hold downs!!! :shake:

cut out poor aftermarket wiring for fogs . The fogs are going in the circlular file..:puke:
I need some piaa 520 fogs..
Missing air box brackets..!

Other than that... she's tried true...
I've been busy fixing all the crap...

Now it's up to par..

Time for frothy brew...:bananatoast:
