I have a set of Maxxis MA-V1 245/40 18 on my 99 gt forester and I have taken them off road before and they go fine but I have never taken them on sand before and was wondering if anyone had any experience with low profile tires and sand driving.

Thanks

Adrian

Hi and welcome Adrian.

Low profile tyres should be ok on hard packed sand but for loose boggy sand higher profiles allow you to run lower pressures and gain a longer footprint with out risking damage to your rims and tyres.

You should be able to pick up a secondhand set of 15" steel rims with reasonable tyres on for less than the cost of 1 of your current tyres.

Just a PITA having to swap wheels every time you want to go off road.

At Fraser your 18s will be useless. 15s or 16s will be your best bet. For 100$ you could pickup some subaru 15" rims with tyres.
Is your foz lowered too?

... And welcome to the forum Adrian.

G'day my99foz & :welcome: to ORS.
Another thing you should look at aswell, is a sump guard, unless you already have one.
Especially if you're looking at doing some sand driving, as the plastic splash plate is almost guaranteed to be ripped off on sand.

As for the 18's, you might struggle a bit, particularly with the low profiles of your tyres. With 15's or even 16's, you'll be able to lower the pressures a little more, thus allowing for a better footprint :iconwink:

Crossbred performance is up your way and have some pretty cool gear to suit your car. ( I'm assuming your in Queensland. You can add your location to your profile.)

Thanks for the warm welcome and words of wisdom I have been into foresters for years now but have only really got into the off road side of stuff recently since we decided to get a camper trailer and found out my xs didn't have the balls to tow it so the wife's gt got called up to do the job

I do have a set of steel 16's with 215/60 michelin energy mx1 plus tyres but they are very much a high way patten would they be a better option?

Its not lowered anymore its now raised with king springs in the back and is soon to have a 40mm lift kit in the front to go with the standard height king springs

I made a sump guard for it this weekend as I was worried about the fmic and pipe work so it should be good now

Crossbred performance sounds interesting do they have a website? and I also added my location lol

G'Day & welcome Adrian

Yes, these will be much better for sand; less agressive tread pattern is actually better in sand than AT tyres. Drop them to 16-18 psi; if they don't "float" over the sand then drop to 14 psi. You can go to 10 for an emergency. No fast turns and no fast stops.

Yep, bigger lugs dig bigger holes, quicker (in sand).

A set of maxtrax are good insurance too if your travelling alone, if a little cumbersome.
Supa****p has 20% off sales and it's the best way to get em cheap. (I think they come pretty close to making a loss)

Those 16" rims sound like the weapon of choice.

Have a good trip!

G'day mate :welcome:

IMO the 16's even with road tyres will be much better

Make sure you bring your camera & post heaps of pics for us southerners & those OS :iconwink:
