Possum died in 2003- a time I still remember as a particularly bad one. Before Subaru abandoned rallying, they would put numerous different stickers on to their cars reflecting their rally wins. I think most people removed the stickers- maybe yours will become semi valuable?
Possum's death was such a tragedy. At the launch of the MY03 STI, I enjoyed chatting to him about his Rally Sweden debut- and he was so excited about it. Then, just before Rally of Canberra we learnt of the horrific accident in New Zealand. At the ROC, we asked the crew about Possum but he was still in a critical condition. Days later we heard the tragic news that he had died. A number of us went to the funeral service at the Hordern Pavilion- it was so very sad. I spoke to his wife and his sister- both beautiful people. His sister had a very strong New Zealand accident, and his wife was just so strong. A couple of years later I met her again at Rally New Zealand. She still had him very much in her mind. At the time he was one of the most popular men in his country- and an amazing man. Single handed he took rallying to heights never seen before. Sadly, since he died the sport has withered- such was the force of his personality. My WRX still bears the sticker "Doing it for Possum" I bought his autobiography when it came out and I asked Petter Solberg- who was the reigning world champion at the time- to sign it. Petter is a great bloke- and I have supported him ever since.
RIP Possum.
