Hi all am about to set off on a road trip to South Australia towing my old but new to me JaySwan Camper. Thats the easy part but what i was looking at was live tracking/real time mapping using either my GPS or my Android phone and or a combination of both.

Im my travels surfing the net i have come upon 2 likely candidates.

1: OzExplorer Track Me Live Tracking, havent delved alot into it yet and times running out but will look into it more tonight, i think its $$$'s up front.

2:https://www.instamapper.com which is a phone app for Iphone and Android and its free. I use an app called run keeper for my hikes and it works great on my Tesltra blue tick phone so i am thinking the phone maybe the way to go.

Does anyone have and more ideas on a cost effective real time tracker/mapper for touring?

cheers
Tony

Spot Tracker is popular - no idea of cost.

Thanks Kevin! already checked that one, its $207au plus an annual service fee.

Still browsing and will make a decision within a fortnight. Its for future use not necessarily this trip, this ones a test and shake down for car camper and my future travelling needs.

Do explore that website
(here, for others: https://www.findmespot.net.au/ ).

They offer a couple of different devices, some more suitable for particular needs than others.

I have also found that the Garmin Nuvi 30 GPS tracks all my journeys and way points and times, and that this is down-loadable and able to be printed from Google Maps. Very interesting.

Thanks for the info mate

i have the capability to take my data off the GPS in the car and put across to google maps but its real time tracking i am interested in at the moment and the phone seems to be the way to go (maybe i am wrong), but i dont want to keep handing over hard earned for subscriptions every year and then extras.

I still have to weight up data usage vs annual subscriptions etc, its all trial and error at the moment, just putting a toe in the water to see whats out there.

I understand what you are saying, but don't forget that the primary purpose of a FindMeSpot (or whatever ... ) is to save your life. Any other benefits are merely cream on the cake, IMNSHO.

The FindMeSpot devices are actually cheaper than an EPIRB, while providing a whole lot of additional functionality that justifies what one hopes will never happen - that is, that your life depends on it!

BTW, I am going through exactly the same process myself.

I like the idea of this device, that allows you to send and receive text messages as well. Not the same functionality as a SatPhone, but exactly the same outcome.
