It only started not that long ago, only when i turned left though...
And now it does it when i turn left AND Right...even when im not in full lock...

Welcome to ORS mate :welcome:.

Our regular mechanic sticks a re-conditioned shaft in either our Camry or my old Impreza for around $250 (just one side). Have had to have this done a couple of times over 18 years.

By the time one hears the characteristic clack-clack-clack sound that indicates you have a broken boot, it is far too late to consider replacing the boot (which ends up costing nearly as much as slipping in a re-co shaft anyway ... ).

Ross reckons that it is easier and cheaper to slip a re-co shaft and CVs in than it is to try to strip and repair them. The CV joints are generally re-manufactured with over-size balls, new cage, machined outer and inner grooves.

cheers for the reply mate :)

How much would it cost to get both, left and right done on my 85 l series??

i got it for $500 and shortly after, the CVs started being silly buggers...

I know i need alot of work done to it, but the odomoter reads just shy of 400,000kms...so im second guessing whether i continue this project....

G'day Maximus_846 & :welcome: to ORS.

The last time I did a CV & had it replaced (about 3 mths ago) it was about $280-$290 for the drivers side.
That was both supply & fit as I couldn't be bothered doing it myself

Regards
Mr Turbo

far out...is it even worth doing the replacement, as i havent paid for the car yet, mate and i wrote up a contract stating i can use the car for a week and if anything goes wrong within that week with normal driving, then its up to me whether i decide to start buying it...

He wants $500 for it...
Any help??

Thats a tough question to answer but maybe some more info might help, like engine type & condition, body, suspension, etc...what sort of condition is the car in. Plus...how much work are you able to do on it yourself?

The CV joints do NOT get buggered in a week ...

[EDIT] Previous post from my phone, so short by necessity ... :iconwink:

G'day again Max

What I was saying in shorthand was that there is no way known your mate can expect you to foot the bill for the CV joints/drive shafts.

The joints don't 'clack' until months after the damage has been done to the boot/s.

The 'clack' is caused by abrasive stuff getting into the joint via the broken boot, and then wearing a circumferential groove in the CV joint, particularly when the car is going straight, of course. This groove will be in the centre of the normal line of drive of the CV joint.

When you turn the steering, the CV joint balls have to jump out of this groove in the ball tracks in both the inner and outer races of the joint. This jumping is what causes the 'clack' noise. As the car driving wheels turn round and round when driving other than straight ahead, the CV joint balls moves back and forth over the groove, causing the characteristic clack-clack-clack noise that translates very roughly into human-speak as "dollar-dollar-dollar" :(.
