Hey!
Ive built up a 1985 Subaru L Series wagon that was sitting for a fair few years!
And now ive got it back on the road, and am wanting to install a 2" Tachometer onto the steering wheel column!

I firstly tried to set it all up under the bonnet, but never received a reading from the tacho...

Its a 2" Venom Tachometer.
Red wire = + (Attached it to the + terminal)
Black Wire = - (Attached it to the - terminal)
Green wire = Tach wire (Attached it to the -ve coil)
Orange wire = illumination

But for some reason i received no idle reading what so ever!

Someone please help me!!

. When you say + or - terminal do you mean the battery? + should be wired to the ignition on, not the battery. Can only assume from what you have said the wires go where you say they should- I mean the colours. Normally these things are wired up to the - side of the coil

yea i did exactly that...but when it came to receiving a reading...even at idle, there was nothing!

Yet just for ****s and giggles, i put it to the + on the coil and BAM, it worked!
