On Monday I made a spur of the moment decision (mainly based on the fine weather forecast) for a quick trip. Headed off through Marysville, and stopped at Cambarville to check out the Big Culvert:

From there, I continued on towards Wood Point, and it's famous, historic service station:

From Woods Point, I followed the Goulburn River north, through Jamieson and onto Mansfield. Spent the night at a bush camp along Carter's Road, near Sawmill Settlement:

Tuesday morning, it was up Mt Stirling to Telephone Box Junction, then around the Circuit Road to Razorback Hut. Certainly not your average cattlemans hut!

I continued on around the Circuit Road to Craigs Hut:

And came across this newly formed bridge

Turned off the Circuit Road, and headed down to Bindaree Falls:

There is a walking track that leads behind the falls:

Looking out through the curtain:

Then it was down and across the Howqua River, and onto Bindaree Hut. This is a much more typical high country hut

Then the fun began - up 16 Mile Jeep Track to Bluff Hut. Extremely steep, lots of erosion bars, very deep ruts and very slippery. No photos, because I was too busy trying to keep the momentum up, and the heart rate down! Very glad I did it though, it's one of the high country classics. Rated 4WD blue.

At Bluff hut:

Unfortunately, I pinched a tyre on the Bluff track, $331 for a new one.

From Bluff hut, it was back down along the Howqua to Sheepyard Flat, then to Mansfield. Returned to Melbourne via the western edge of Lake Eildon along the Skyline Rd:

About 780km over 2 days, the highlight was making it up 16 Mile Jeep Track. The lowlight was trashing the tyre...

Wow, some really great pics there mate! Sounds like you had a great time, too bad about the tyres though.
Maybe look at getting something abit more suited for that terrain(gravel) when the time comes.
The last one and the one with the log over the foz are my favourite pics :D

Nice. Jealous.

On the weekend I drove up to the Blue Mountains to try out a track in a Holden Jackaroo. Not nice tings to drive I have to say. The track we were going to try was closed due to weather. Instead we went looking for another track to see where it took us. Ended up at the Colo River. Never knew a track existed there before- turns out it has only been open 8 months. Nice scenery along the way too

Great report - very tempted to go and do a similar trip. What maps did you use? Apart from Bluff Hill, I'm guessing most of the tracks were doable in a non-modified Forester/Outback etc?

Great trip report sjm
Sorry to hear about the tyre damage :sadbanana:
Fantastic pics too I must say, they're brilliant to say the least
I don't know which one I like best, it's just too hard, as they're all so good :raz:

Regards
Mr Turbo

My Forester is stock, unmodified, straight off the showroom floor. It's only 5 months old, so still under warranty, and therefore, no mods for me. All tracks are 2WD, apart from Craigs Hut and Bluff Hut, both of which are 4WD green, and 16 Mile Jeep Track, which is 4WD blue. As for maps, I used the DSE Forests Notes :- Upper Goulburn Historic Area, and Circuit Road - Mt Stirling, plus the Vicmap Buller-Stirling, and Hemas Road & 4WD atlas.

Great 'spur of the moment' trip!!!

Sometimes those can be the best. Sounds like you had a great time, and some fantastic photos.

great trip
I went up to Craigs hut a couple of years ago, in a fairly stock 99 forester, using forestry maps.
Highly recommended trip

Great trip report, love the photos.

I thought Craigs Hut had burnt down?

Must say you were game parking under the tree for a photo lol haha ;)

Great photos mate! It's a great part of the world there - my grandfather lives on the banks of the Goulburn just outside Seymour

Finally got around to uploading some videos.
End of summer makes for easy river crossings...

Looks like a great little trip sjm. Certainly mind wouldn't doing that one if I was down that way.

Sounds like a good destination for a day trip Rally. We haven't done an OFRS trip for a while.
