Oops

Gidday Rally

Same here.

Going downhill on the SE Freeway at Hahndorf in SA towards Mt Barker in my '68 Landcruiser towing a double horse float, full of steel pipes ... The float started to sway.

Of course, one must NEVER touch the brakes in these circumstances ...

I accelerated as hard as I could and it pulled the trailer straight.

My palms were a tad sweaty after that!

I have come across caravans (mainly) in this position. The drivers always say "It started to sway, so I just touched the brakes" ... :(.
Of course, most of these have been 20~30 foot vans behind Holdens and Falcons. When the towed weight weighs more than 75% of the towing vehicle's weight, it becomes a "tail wagging the dog" scenario very, very easily ...

Thats a big oops alright
The driver that took the vid is very lucky that they didn't get taken out aswell :o

It would be a horrible situation to be in. Especially because you know what might just happen when you start to sway.

I have to say though when I went on my trip up north last year with the foz and towed the tinny I didn't have any sway issues. Even when I had to get upto 130-140 a few times to overtake. Probably because the boat and trailer only weighted 200kg or so compared to the over 2 tonne car at the time.

Oops is right! Wow!
I appreciate the info Ratbag. Never had this happen while towing trailers, but my first instinct until now would be to hit the brakes. Not anymore!

I did not hit the brakes either- which is why I survived that encounter. I had a box trailer on and I'd filled it with clay to be dumped off the next day. Overnight it poured down- and now the load was much heavier than I envsaged. And since I'd loaded it evenly, rather than with more weight up front, the weight of the load at the back acted as a cantilever, lifting the rear of the car. Thankfully I was in a fairly big vehicle or it would have been all over red rover. I was only doing 80km/h at the time! So i went up the freeway not game to go over 70, which in a 110 zone is not good either.

My mate was towing home his race car. Going down the Hume Hwy on the divided bridge at Mittagong, he took up 3 lanes of the highway as per the video, his foot flat to the floor to pull it out and he topped out at 160km/h. Once under control, he pulled over to calm down. The police saw the whole thing, and came up to have a chat. They must have been impressed with his driving as they did not take the matter any further.

Many of the trailers I see on the road scare the :censored: out of me for this very reason. I stay well behind them until it is safe to pass, then I get passed them as quickly as possible, speed limit be damned.

I'm the same carljwnc :iconwink:
When I see one up in front of me I'll usually just hang back a little. Then when its all clear, & it's safe to do so, I just punch it to get past them :)
I prefer seeing a trailer in my rear mirrors, rather than in front of me any day :iconwink:

I have a better idea. Leave the trailer at home!

Nah :iconwink:.

Looks as if a purpose built 6x4 is in my near future.
My current 30 y.o. 7x4 needs a lot of attention with a welder, which I don't own anymore.

Travelling on one's lonesome demands that a whole trailer load of stuff comes along as well ...

Anyway, it's awfully difficult to get into that kind of trouble towing a < 750 kg, single axle trailer!

Yeah that was an epic fail!

Anyone else notice how the car that's being towed was moving on the trailer too - obviously not tied on very well to begin with. This is the danger of a shifting load!

Massive loss there, hope no one was seriously injured.

Cheers

Bennie

Ditto, me too.

I'm thinking that the person filming the incident might have had an accident themselves, too, but in another form & from the other end, if you catch my drift
