HEADS UP: Garmin Nuvi 30 GPS on SALE

Gidday Folks

[EDIT] Sorry, this is the Garmin Nuvi 30, and is available here:
https://dicksmith.com.au/product/D1394/garmin-nuvi30-gps
[end edit]

Dick Smith is chucking this GPS unit out for $78!!

Normal RRP is AUD $149.

I bought one (of course ... :iconwink: :lildevil: ). Specially for my SWMBO ...

Upgraded the device maps, which is free for the first 90 days (!), and covers all of Oz and NZ in full detail.

Immediately searched for "Phasmid" and "LV1" which the upgraded device found instantly.

For the saving, one can buy a lifetime (of the device ... ) of map upgrades, and possibly speed camera updates as well ... .

If this all sounds too good to be true - you're RIGHT!

Methinks I will be buying another one tomorrow - for me ... :rotfl:.

Feel free to ask any questions. I will answer them if I can.

I've been having probs with my Garmin nuvi 255 (I think thats the number?). Was fine till I did an update on a SD card. I think I'l try formatting the card then do another update.

Ratbag, yours sounds good though, esp if it found those little tracks!

Mate, for $78 it's almost like stealing!!
I just bought another one this morning.
That's for SWMBO, as I decided I wasn't going to let go of the first one after updating the maps and having a play with it ...

She is slowly getting the idea that the device will take you to a very familiar place FROM ANY DIRECTION or other place, not just the ways you are totally familiar with ...

For $30 more than a new Melways ... What more can I say?
My "reference" Melways in my study is 1996, and the one in my car is REALLY recent, a 2003 edition ... :rotfl:.

SALE ENDS TOMORROW FOLKS - 29 January 2012.

That is a steal for a garmin!! Why are garmins somuch more expensive overhere in holland.. :-{
Can someone tell me if an nuvi is any good offroad? Is it capable of showing you a route (made in mapsource) or a track when there are no roads? I am looking for a replacement fot my old garmin quest. A salesman is trying to sell me a garmin zumo 660. Cost a whopping 650 euro. The nuvi serie is starting at 150..
Greetings from holland!

You probably get robbed the way we mostly do here in Oz, mate ... For pretty well everything.
Things that are imported into this country that cost (say) $500 when our dollar was worth US $0.57 still cost $500 when the Oz $ has been between US $1.00 and US $1.10 for the last 12 months. Since the Chinese Yuan is tied to the dollar ... go figure.

Our dollar has also gone up relative to almost all other currencies.

It can certainly find tracks such as the forestry tracks in our state and national parks (SP & NP, respectively). Where there are no roads or tracks - e.g. from Simpson, Northern Territory to Birdsville, Queensland it cannot find anything. BUT it will tell you where you are, relative to both of them if you happen to be tackling the Simpson Desert crossing. This crossing is all but suicidal to attempt by oneself, IMNSHO.

Is it capable of showing you a route (made in mapsource) or a track when there are no roads?

I don't think that one can upload maps to it; but I really don't know.

AFAICT, the main difference between the bottom of the line Nuvi 30 (Oz $78) and the first "serious" Garmin model (Oz $199, same store) is the bigger screen size and that the far more expensive one accepts Bluetooth for use with your phone. I already have a Bluetooth hands free ... Whether it can also accept stuff from the MAPS or GOOGLE MAPS s/w on my Blackberry Torch 9810 or not, I cannot tell you.

I find that my Nuvi 30 gets very confused about areas that I know very well; but that could be partly due to my lack of experience with the device.
