Hello all, i've brought my outback across to Geraldton WA and enjoying the beach fishing. the sand is softer than the east so i'm chasing a set of 215/70 15s. i've got a set of rims ready just need the tyres.

so far i've got quotes for:
geolander ats @ $235 (fair price?)
L/longs or sony's @ $120 (car tyre)

As much as i'd love a set of ats's, it's a fair bit of coin for the spare rubber sitting in the shed. was hoping someone could point me in a cheaper direction, would be happy with 2nd hand but at this stage trying to avoid car tyres since i'd be running 15-20psi.

Note. car has king springs lift, will run 16's for daily use. have inherited car from my dad (buttwrx).

Hey mate, im in gero!!!!! Wooohooo for another gero person.

The geolanders are worth every cent. I have them and in that size too on my forester. They are great, especially on the sand at 15psi. She literally goes anywhere here in town.

Welcome to the forum anyway.

If you want to meet up im really keen too. Id be happy to show you my tyres and discuss them if your interested?
Plus i know a few good fishing spots...
Send me a pm if your up for it.

Cheers
Taza

Hi
have you checked if the 15" rims fit at the front?
with Foresters the later models cannot use the earlier 15" because of bigger brake calipers. Not sure if this applies to Outbacks

G'day Gero OB & :welcome: to ORS.
When I bought my Geo A/T's they were about $220 a corner a couple of years ago now but that was for the 215/65/16's though. So probably not much help. It might give you a rough idea on price though :iconwink:

Like lefty said too, you might want to check that the 15" rims do actually fit over the brake calipers of your OB aswell.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Welcome Gero OB!

Yes, it will depend on the year model e.g. my old '97 OB had 15s.

In considering AT tyres what is going to be your main use of the car? If you primarily want it for sand then avoid "chunky" tread patterns and go for something that is smoother and balloons well. I'm thinking if you can squeeze a wider tyre, say 225, in there with the same aspect (65) would better suit sand.

What tyres are on the 16" rims?

yes rims clear, using 15x6 off 02 imprezza so 215 is about the limit for width.

curently running 16x7 99 wrx rims with near new 215/60 michelin xm1+, don't really like the idea of dropping the presure below 25 on these.

main reason for thinking of using ats were for a bit stronger sidewall so i could deflate to 15psi if needed. that's why i'm trying to avoid cheap car tyers. has anyone out there had sidewall issues when deflating car tyres?

NO, NO, $235 for geo ats is a rip off. I just ordered a set of these from tire rack this morning in 215/60r17. I did a quick mock order with your size x 4, shipped to 99115, (Seattle for an example)...total price with shipping $493.76. They are listing these at $107 each. Shipping out of nevada on 28 Jan. You can probably get them mounted, balanced and installed for around $100. Go to Tire Rack.com and check it out. It is a very useful website for research too.

Don't make us Aussie counter parts cry.... BTW have used that site to look for grippy road tyres for my old mx-5, great site but gets a little depressing when you find something you want to later find out they're not imported into aus.

Oh sorry mate, I assumed Geraldton WA, was is Washington state, USA. I am a nubie and feel pretty stupid now that I know Geraldton is down under. I could buy them here, stick em in a bottle and push them across the pond?:rotfl:

I haggled Tyres and More here in Gero to get the 215/70R15 Geolanders down to $210 each from $235
It was a better price than what I could get in Perth also after calling a heap of places.

Gidday Gero

Mate, if you have 15x6 rims and they fit, why not put a set of Bridgestone D694s on them? These are basically an off-road light truck tyre, with a great tread pattern, and will not screw up your speedo or legality.

https://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d694.aspx

One problem is that they cost a bomb ($255 a corner), and you may have to get "permission" from your insurer and Roads Dept because they only have an "S" rating (180 km/h ... ). The load rating is way above anything that we can get in a 16" rim for our vehicles. So is the tread pattern.

There was a policeman in the tyre shop waiting for the Bridgestone Turanza GR90s to be fitted to his pursuit vehicle (they are the standard police pursuit tyre here ... ). I asked him whether he would be worried about me doing 185 km/h on an "S" rated tyre. He said "No; and you wouldn't be either, because I would confiscate the vehicle at that speed." and smiled ... Nice to meet a cop with a sense of humour :).

Tyre calculator is our friend here:
https://www.inawise.com/tyre-calculator/tyre-size-calculator.html

BTW, I was running my Pirelli P7s at around 17 psi, and it didn't seem to hurt them. When we aired up, the servo tyre gauge was dodgy, so I drove home on 45, 48, 65, 90+ or thereabouts. Nothing blew up ....

Hope this drivel helps ... :iconwink:.

+1 for the Geolander AT-s, brilliant compromise between onroad performance, esp on wet roads, & offroad. They have sidewall protection plus factory puncture warranty...Yokohama wouldnt provide that unless they were pretty confidant!

johnwayne5811, dont worry mate, easy mistake. Arent you glad your tyre (tire lol) prices are sooo much cheaper than here! See what we have to put up with

Haha, everytime i see some say they are from WA, Washing state is what comes to mind. But yeah, you can feel better that we only pay between half & a third of what our counterparts down under have to pay. Then again, we stay jealous of the options they have available to them for Forester Mods. One of these days, somebody will step up out here & make a killin! They would def. have the market to themselves on the bullbars/bumpers!

will update you all with what i end up with. curently waiting for a mob to open on monday to see if they have any second hand https://secondhandtyres.com/

also have a estimate of $180 for toyo open country a/ts. mate has these on his navara and he's very happy with them.

for what its worth,
second hand were only car specific from 100 bucks!
toyo came in at $209
did find quote for ironman M+S rated car tyres of $110.

for now, project is on hold.

If you are staying on the sand, then I wouldn't get hung up on getting an AT tyre. With lighter cars like the Subies, the heavier sidewalls can sometimes make it difficult to get them to bag out unless you drop the pressure really low, and then you've got the risk of debeading.

Most "highway terrain" 4WD tyres are essentially road tyres anyway. i wouldn't waste my money on them - just buy a decent road tyre.

Perhaps check with the Subie 4WD Club of WA and see what those guys are running.

Toyo Tranpath and Teo have been used by a few people further south. I used to run the old Tranpath MP3 on my MY03 Forester - worked fine on sand, for example getting in and out of Stockyard Gully cave along Beekeepers Rd during wildflower season (when the Beekeepers churn up the road in their Bedfod trucks). Never had to run them less than 20psi in the sand. Having said that, I put a set of Tranpath MP4s on about a year before I sold it, and they were nowhere near as good, on or off road.

Getting my Geolandar 215/70/16s in Gero on saturday for 240 a corner. Apparently tire prices are gonna be going up.

:censored: yeah they are going up! 3yrs ago i replaced all my wifes tires with 60,000mile BFG all seasons for right at $75/ea (including tax, install, lifetime balance & rotation, and road hazard warranty). Now those damn things are up to $100 before all the other fees.
