Licensing off-road aftermarket upgrade designs for US?

Just floating an idea here - I have no intention of doing this myself, but thought I'd mention it to see where it goes.

Basically, those of us in the 'States are pretty well starved for aftermarket off-road upgrades. Springs, spacers, and skids is about what it comes down to - no bumpers, the locally-available spacers are all at the 1" mark presently, and there's a dearth of other stuff except for perhaps rally lights.

So, my question: have any of the fab shops in the US looked into licensing designs from companies outside of the US for US manufacture?

Since most of this stuff is likely being drawn up in a CAD/CAM package prior to manufcture, it'd essentially be a case of working out the agreement between the US and foreign manufacturers, having the CAD/CAM files emailed to the US, and building and selling the gear here. The US market gets stuff we can't now at prices we can actually afford to pay, and the foreign manufacturer gets a royalty on each unit sold here.

Just curious to know if this has been considered at all on this side of the world - it seems like there is something of an aftermarket there for making Subarus somewhat more trail-capable (granted, not as large as the Jeep / Big Three / Toyota / Nissan ones), but nobody's really tapped into it yet to see where it goes.

Well, we do have both Sumo Parts and Jackson Rally in various stages of working on bigger than 1" lift kits. They are both vendors on the forum, so check them out. Might not hurt to put a bug in their ear about the bumper/bull bar thing. It would be really nice to see a SubaXtreme style bumper available.

Sumo does stock both KYB struts and Iron Man springs for Subies, and if you don't see something specific for your car on the web site, e-mail and ask. Sumo and Jackson were also putting out the call for donor vehicles for product development just a short while ago, there are threads for both that a little search should find you.:iconwink:

Availability aside, our friends in the US probably pay less overall for a done up Subaru. Sure, the aftermarket stuff may cost more, but the cars themselves are heaps cheaper. A poverty pack Forester here in Australia is a $35,000 proposition- and with the A$ worth slightly more than the US$, that is pretty painful. Anyway, I hope for you guys it can be done

I think carljwnc might be on the right track there about this. Having a little word in Sumo Parts and Jackson Rally ears can't hurt & maybe thats all thats needed to start the ball rolling.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Strangely enough, it was going through Sumo Parts' website that gave me the licensing idea  Odd though it may sound, I already bothered them about doing a 1" version of the 2" lift for those of us running lift springs - perhaps I should drop them another note...
