is there a front and rear of the rear strut? I have taken it out and the tophat threads fit no matter which way I turn it...

You need to mention model & year of your car.

I know that in the Foresters the front has no side but the rear does.

There should be an arrow that points to the outside.

sorry, It's a 2010 sh. I know I have the left and right correct, just think I may have put the right rear in opposite. I checked the left side and just put the right so that the spring perch was facing the same way. Only reason i am concerned is that the back right side is about 1/4"- 3/8" higher than the back left...yes I am sure it is not the pavement, I turned the car around as well to make certain. oh well, I'll just make everyone sit on that side of the car I guess! I will look for the arrow as well Rally.

It is stamped in- if dirty you'll never find it

Where would the stamp be? Just thinking he could scrub the general area till he finds it...

Should be on top of the hat.

I looked for the arrow, never did find it... I found that the person who inspected the bolts and nuts for torque at the factory put some red paint on the front of the struts, they are both facing the same way. I guess next time I am at the dealer getting oil filters I will peak under a stock one to confirm.
