Hi guys, I'm new here (and to subes) I was wanting to know if anyone knew what size tyre I can fit under a standard height L wagon. I got some 14" sunraysia wheels (brumby) and I was thinking of going 195/70.... she's not a serious off roader maybe a run to the beach for some fishing, will be slightly better than my old datsun though ;)

You'll find they are surprisingly capable.
The only thing that lets Subies down are lack of articulation & no aftermarket locking diffs...yet ;)

A run on the beach is in most cases a piece of cake if you air down the tyres.

Cant help with tyre sizes on an L...sorry. Others will though

G'day Species & :welcome: to ORS.
Sorry I can't help re tyre sizes. However, there's a few members on here who do & I'm sure they'll pop in & let you know :)

Cool, My old man had an L wagon a few years back and took it up Fraser Is. a couple of times, looked like a lot of fun. Well, I kinda went with the 195/70's anyway, just waiting for them to arrive now... If they stick outside the guards I'll just buy a stick on flare kit so I can pass RWC.. haha dodgey but it'll have to do for now.
I've been checking out youtube and these things are surprisingly capable! :)

Ok well it was a round about way.. but I got my RWC but just for anyone else who wants to know, putting on 14" sunraysia wheels(brumby offset) with 195 wide tyres will have them stick outside the gaurds(fenders) and probably won't pass RWC but I haven't noticed any rubbing with my 195/65/14 tyres under it. That being said, the suby place down the road suggested a stick on flare kit that will "extend" the guards over the wheels making it somewhat legal.

Yep that's all you need.

So you got the RWC?

Just found this thread. Looks like you have found and answer already. Some 14s will fit ok if they have the standard offset. If the offset puts them too wide, you may find that the tyres could rub at full lock and full articulation. This can even be a problem with a 2inch lift if the tyres are too big.

Sorry cant give exact tyre sizes as I still run Factory size 175/70x13, but I know others have played with 14inch sizing.

Beigewagon.

Yeah I kinda got it done on the sneaky... I dropped it in with the bad tyres and told the guy I was going out to pick up new ones... It took longer than expected and by the time I got back, he just wanted to see the tread so he just looked at the tyres sitting in the back of the other car... o_O I didn't know how badly they were going to stick out until I put them on at home

Haha well done ;)

They shouldn't stick out the guards that much. Half inch at the most from memory. Here's what my subi looked like early on, sorry for the oversized image, blame my early imageshack days:

I didn't run flares, and I still didn't run flares with the desert rats and the 27s when they did the same thing.

Those rims aren't brumby offset, the brumby's offset is the same as the L series, these are after market rims and thus the offset isn't quite correct:

^ Same rims, same offset, different sized boots ;)

yeah, half inch sounds about right, enough to upset an RWC I thought. That's why the query... so you never got picked up by the cops for your rubber sticking out? what state are you in? On the sunshine coast, the cops are pretty ruthless and admittedly I think I was a part in instigating the "hoon laws" they introduced here about 10 years ago... (having a 200hp datsun 1600 will do that)

Here's a quick pic of my subey so you can judge for yourself :)

Vic... The cops down here can be the same too. There seems to be more and more setups around the silly season (and other times of the year come to think about it) that do breatho and RWC checks at the same time... Fun fun.

Sorry mate, but the link to that picture didn't work, says it's 1x1 pixels!

Cheers

ok well I'll try to drive around until they defect me for the tyres... hopefully they will just give me a notice and not a fine! and I changed the link.. to my facebook album, that will probably work.

i started with an L series, went to Fraser for about 9 yrs. would go up to waddy pt and cross inskip pt without too much worry. and that was on the standard 185 13s. 2nd low range with a fair bit of stick should float over the soft stuff, just have to watch not to tear cv boots on sticks/roots in the sand tracks. best thing i did was the 2inch body lift, gets the sand out of the enginebay and airfilter plus less draging across the deep sand tracks.

you should have plenty of fun anyway. a set of scorpion wheels might be nice to aspire to if you ever have some spare coin https://www.scorpionsubaru.com/

Hey mate, ive done some reading myself and found that without a lift kit, without bashing the wall and adding a flair kit, you can fit 25" tyres on the l series!

This will indeed be the first thing i do...then going to possibly add a 3" Lift kit

I called them, they don't make Scorpion wheels for L series anymore :(

Seriously? No mods at all? Did they mention rubbing at full lock at all cos that's awesome.... now that I bought some tyres! haha no that's good to know, I got some real cheapies @ $25/tyre on my sunraysia 14s so when I get some coin looks like I'll be getting some of those.

Yep, they're hard to find, and when you do find a set if they know what they've got you'll pay dearly for them! Trust me, I know ;)

I'd say that this is with the offset rims such as the desert rats. Even with a 3 inch lift, the scorpion rims and 27 inch rubber I get a tiny bit of rubbing at full lock :( It's a bit disappointing but I don't think there's much I can do about this :(
