As i mentioned in my trip report the Subaru mechanic told me a rear seal was leaking...driver side/rear diff.
I am on my way to Point Turton and made a roadside camp at Coomandook and notice an oil spray over my boat. Checked the diff and it has got a fair bit worse. Not heaps coming out but not good. Will have to be done.
Is this hard to do or will i need to go to a subie dealer?
There is a dealer at Murray Bridge and i am not far from there but would have to wait till monday.
Any ideas???

I think that is the best idea. There is one about 35klms away at Murray Bridge. I will stay here tonight and head up tomorrow morning.
I was more wondering how big a job this is. It does not look too complicated.....read expensive. Anyone know??

I've never done one so can't help.

I'll be there when they open. If i have to wait for any parts i'll just have to do it. I will be on their doorstep when they open tomorrow.
I got under the car and tightened up the bolts as much as i could but there was only 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn in it.
This is the first time anything has gone wrong with the car and i will check out the situation re this when i talk to Subaru tomorrow.
Pain in the bum!!! to put it a nice way.
Any SA members know a decent mechanic around Murray Bridge??

Well all good. I am at Murray Bridge Subaru and they have been great. Started off really good, about $180 to supply and fit and they had a couple of seals in stock but it has gone backwards a bit since then. Turns out the diff in the car is a bigger one and the part number was not the correct number for my car. They have sourced one in Adelaide and have sent someone to pick it up. Adelaide is about 100klms away.
As it turns out it was worthwhile coming here. The diff oil was milky as water has got in and it needs to be flushed and replaced.
The fellow hopes to get me on my way later today.
I must say i am impressed once again with the service i have got off Subaru dealers. Had a lend of a new Outback to go uptown to get some maps and they have made a good effort to help me out.

Thats great news. Glad you were able to find a great dealer & mechanic.
Might be time to do you're next mod & put some diff breathers on too, since they found water in the diff :iconwink: :)

Mr Turbo

That is something I might do over the summer break. The diff breather is circled in red

I have had a diff breather fitted. The mechanic said that the water would have more than likely got in from the bad seal. The diff oil was changed at the 100,000klm service as far as i know but if it wasn't it could have got in from the floods when i was living in Vic and had to cross some rather deep creeks that were well over the diff height and at this stage i did not have a breather.
As it turns out they got the correct seal from Adelaide and had me on my way by about 2.30pm. I made Point Turton last night and will catch up in my trip report.
If you can get the Subaru dealers to behave on price i would have to say it is worthwhile going to them. I am not sure what a non Subaru mechanic would have done in this situation.
All up it cost me $258.

Glad you got it sorted out without too much pain. This dealer sounds very helpful.

I've been wanting to put in a diff breather in my '99Foz but from the look I had under the car couldnt even see the breather. Does anyone know how you can do it without taking the diff out?

Yes it can. It's not that hard to do, but it can be a little tricky.

The link Kevin put up is a "how to install diff breathers" from when I did mine a couple of years ago :iconwink:

There is a thread here: https://www.offroadsubarus.com/showthread.php?t=40&highlight=breather&page=2

Because I did mine years ago and it was unknown territory at that time, I cut a 40mm hole through the spare wheel well to get at the top of the diff.

Thanks guys...looks a bit tricky to get it back in but i'm sure i'll be able to do it following the tips provided.
