Alrighty, well we're home, rested & now i'm back in the office. Luckily it's the week of Thanksgiving so the few things i took time out of my vacation to do have paid off, so this week i am free and clear! What a better time to do this than at work, right? :iconwink:

MANY PICTURES TO COME!

So we left at about 12:30am Saturday morning Nov 12 & arrived in Red River about 13hrs later after what turned out to be about 800 (1287 km).

A herd of Exotic game (looked like prong horns) that got out of their fence in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE New Mexico. This had to be one of the most isolated stretches of road i've ever been on & seemed to take forever to get through.

Spotted some wild turkey once we actually hit the perdy country in Cimarron, about 30 miles til Red River.
CIMG1604.jpg

Cimarron Canyon, this was our first encounter with snow!
CIMG1608.jpg

CIMG1606.jpg

Getting to the next town closest to Red River, which is Eagles Nest. The snow was starting to get good!
CIMG1609.jpg

We're we stayed & the welcoming committee.
CIMG1685.jpg

CIMG1621.jpg

And more were on the way... I was really surprised to see the ducks there still with all the ice and snow.
CIMG1622.jpg

Since it was getting dark, we took a little drive down one of the short Forest Roads, this one was called Bitter Creek.
CIMG1623.jpg

CIMG1626.jpg

Found a real cool lodge / frozen lake at the end of it
CIMG1625.jpg

After that, we were pretty tired. It got dark starting at about 3:30 when the sun dipped behind the mountains and was completely dark by 5:30 mountain time. I think we hit the sack at like 7 and did not wake up til 8 the next morning, haha.

Headin up the slopes to have a little fun in the deep snow.

The snow blowing in!
CIMG1640.jpg

We had to build us our first snowmen/snowwoman! These must have taken us atleast 2hrs to put together. Makin snowpeople is hard work!
CIMG1649.jpg

The Red River flowing behind the lodge, down at the base of the slopes

This was the exciting forest rd we took. We went over some pretty high mountain passes with deep snow/ ice. Made things pretty nerve racking for the wife, as for me, i was having the best time ever! The subaru never even blinked when faced with the steep inclines. It was still snowing pretty good too when we were on it. It actually goes for about 13 miles to the town of Questa, to the north.

Hittin the road to Questa, about 12 miles north, going to the Wild Rivers Recreation Area. This is where the Rio Grande and the Red River come together at the bottom of a huge gorge.

Looking south at the mountains we just came from

CIMG1694.jpg

Lookin up. The trail down winds like switchbacks, it's around a mile hike i think, but in that span you go down about 900ft in elevation. Needless to say it was like a windtunnel in there!
CIMG1695.jpg

Leaving the gorge and heading down south to Taos and Angel Fire.
CIMG1700.jpg

Made a quick detour to the Dunn Bridge Rec. Area.

CIMG1707.jpg

Headin down to Taos, another Forry in front!

Coming down the mountain into Angel Fire. This was probably the prettiest of the highway drives we had the whole way.

Went and checked out alot of the awesome log cabins in the upper valley roads. Beautiful area!

Down at Gravel Pit Lake where my wife was collecting Pine Cones & other shenanigans for Christmas decorating when we got home.
CIMG1760.jpg

This half was frozen
CIMG1763.jpg

This half the river flowed into, so it wasn't.

Eagles Nest Lake State Park
CIMG1771.jpg

Going through Bobcat Pass, which is the pass you take to get into Red River from Eagles Nest. Definately once of the lower / least dangerous passes we've ever taken. The ones in Colorado are usually about 2,000ft higher!
CIMG1773.jpg

Went and did a little snow-shoeing on some trails
CIMG1777.jpg

Found a cool frozen Bear Print along the trail
CIMG1782.jpg

This is on the other end of the Forest Rd we took earlier, heading to Cabresto Lake. Just another awesome road out there following switchbacks up and around the mountains.
CIMG1805.jpg

Not far from the Peaks that sit over 12,000ft.

One of the many campground the Carson National Forest has to offer. Unfortunately, they were all closed.

When i get more time, i'll have to upload some of the videos onto youtube

Here's a few random shots i sent in from my phone to photobucket.

I think this was on a road in the upper valley

This was the sun rising on our way home, heading south in New Mexico. Beautimus.
1118110637.jpg

I kept getting the feeling we were being followed......
1118110656.jpg

The windfarms in Northwest TX, from Abilene up to Snyder. Texas just happens to be the leading producer of Wind Power in the United States, leading the runner up California, by over 2 ½ times the amount generated. With the drought being what it has been , they say this area is as bad as it was back in the dust bowl days of the 30's. With all the dust in the air, i believed it.

Our whole trip ended up being 7 miles shy of 2,000 miles.

A couple vids, with more to come.

Found a couple more pics, not sure how they got out of order.

Have to admit driving through the snow on a back road has got to be one of the funnest things to do. I was really surprised at how well my Michelins gained traction through the snow, as many videos shown before on another thread showed the all-seasons not doing well at all in snow on inclines. They said they had great snow traction on reviews, but you know talk is cheap until you give 'em a go around!

Great trip report dirtyRU :raz:
The scenery must have looked amazing to see in person judging by the pics :)
The lakes, with snow & mountains are absolutely magic

Regards
Mr Turbo

Awesome!!! Looks like it was a fantastic time.

Love the snowpeople. One of my favorite winter time activities.

Going to have to come back and watch the videos, but glad y'all got away and had some fun.

Great trip & pics....

Snow = fun.

I noticed your license plate is GC8, did you know that is the body code for the first/classic shape Impreza & WRX sedans from 93 - 00? The wagon was GF8.

Thanks guys! Yeah it was just really nice to get out & away. I've been a bit sour since we got back - saturday it hit 87 outside

Hahah, i had no idea about that. I'll tell them to get it right next time when i go to renew my tags!

Here's a couple more shots i found when going through my phone, trying to clear up some memory.

This one is just after we got out of Caprock Canyon in New Mexico. This was just a little ways north of Clovis, not far from the Texas / New Mexico border.

Had to pack the essentials, figured John (lonestar) would be proud!
1111111950.jpg

Just gone done doing some donuts in a snowed over parking area. If only i could'v got my wife to record me doing it, but she wasn't keen on the idea in the first place. Like we were going to get caught in a national forest in the middle of off season!
1112111621.jpg

And a few more i uncovered from one of the other cameras.

Mule Deer chompin on an orange or an apple we gave it
CIMG1819.jpg

Another awesome log cabin on the outskirts off town
CIMG1822.jpg

Sittin at the nifty diner where we ate most of our meals at, loved that place!
CIMG1825.jpg

A poor shot of the beautiful colors New Mexico's sunrise has to offer. Headin home...
