Hi guys,

i have a Gen 3 Subaru outback, and i want to install a electronic brake controller in order to legally tow our poptop camper. Has anyone installed this in an outback(equivalent), im mainly concerned about where would be a neat place to install it without drilling unnessicary holes into the paneling below the steering column

thanks

ok, well whats the maximum you could tow with a 2.5 gen 3 outback? i have a goldstream goldwing camper, (similar to the pic shown below) would the outback be capable in towing this?

I don't know from experience, however i have seen 2.5 outbacks and foresters, and even 2.0 foresters towering bigger/ heavier than that so you should be fine.

Hell ive seen a 1.8 L series from our ningaloo trip towing quite a large full size caravan.

I wouldn't have a clue about the legalities of the weight of braked/unbraked trailers.

I know it is 750kg without brakes. Can never remember what it is with brakes - I think about 1300kg.

When I was thinking about brakes one option for me was to take off the fuse panel cover under the drivers side vent and squeeze a small controller in there.

Here is a quote from the trailer thread in the camper section (post #18). Don't know the comparative weight of yours and the Jayco Swan.

"Back from my Tassie trip and have started to do some work on the Goose sorry Swan. At the moment i am stripping out all the old seals and sealer and re-doing the lot. I have a few parts gathering here at the moment and some ideas on the table re suspension for the camper. The gas axe will be out in the next few weeks and after the smoke clears she should have a new hub to hub electric brake setup 6 leaf springs and be alot higher off the ground.

The Foz is going to need a stiffer set of rear springs but i will worry about that after i get the new heay duty tow bar and the WDHitch setup.

Followed a Foz the same as mine in Tassie for awhile and he was towing a new Swan Outback and was doing it easy. I asked him about any problems and he said he needed Lo range on a take off up in the hills out of Queenstown and i can understand why.

Al lin all am looking forward to this old goose and the Foz getting out and about."

Hope that helps/
..."

Cheers,

Barry
