Hi all,
I have purchased all the parts etc I need to upgrade my 01 GT with a TD04l turbo from the WRX. I am just wandering if anybody knows whether this is going to harm the offroading capabilities of my GT or help?
I have searched the forums but cannot find much information on this. Any help most appreciated.

Other than too much torque which will cause too much wheel spin I can't thik of anything else.
It will be a machine though :lildevil: It is auto or manual?

I don't know how knowledgeable you are about these things- you realise you cannot just bolt on the bigger turbo and do nothing else? Things you may need to do are:
1)Bigger fuel pump may be required
2)Bigger injectors may be required
3)Re-tune ECU or get pggy back and tune ECU or new ECU and tune. One of these definitely will need to be done.

If you see the thread of what have you done to your car today you will see I have replaced my turbo, so that meant new injectors and a re-tune. The TD04 is bigger than what you have, but it is still a small turbo but I don't know anyone who has one on a 2 litre Forester.

It is manual. To much torque is a bad thing? I thought that torque was wanted when offroading????

The thing with turbos is that they spool up under load even without depressing the throttle any further. And if you do depress the throttle, you cannot get the linear power delivery you need off road. Yes, torque is good, but especially off road you want it to be linear. Damo- Mr Turbo- has experienced that. It just means the car is not as driveable in some situations as a non turbo

head over to Ozfoz if you haven't already. Lots of people there who have added a TD04 to their GTs.

Probably not a big enough improvement to need a re-tune which can't be done without a re-flash or new aftermarket computer which would be $1,000+, personally I'd stay with the original turbo as they are designed to spool up earlier so better off road but they also run out of puff a little earlier than a TD04 which itself is still a pissy little turbo.

Done plenty of searching and researching on TDO4l on OzFoz. Supposedly just bolts on and away you go. I also have the bov, tmic etc for it from a wrx.
Just wanted to know if it hindered or did anything to offroading capabilities.

Yes Rally I know what you mean from personal experience, especially on steep hill climbs
At times you have to back the power off, otherwise you just start spinning wheels half way up  & end up getting stranded
But if you back the power off too much, you end up stopping also :o

Its just a case of finding the happy medium & going with that

So Mr Turbo does that mean having a turbo that spools a little later in the rev range might be beneficial??

From personal experience I would have to say yes.
But in saying that, you just need to know where that special sweet spot is (just on boost) when you're attempting such a climb etc :iconwink:
