Putting the Air filter on top of the engine...

I want to build my forester as a solid off road vehicle, and I want to relocate the air intake away from water (I've already gotten water in the headlight on that side and popped the bulb).
Here's my thought: have the MAF and a cone filter right off the throttle body, pointing aft, and then a hood scoop right above it. Can anyone think of any reason that won't work?

You might be able to get it to work but I don't think you like the results. The engineers have tuned the intake for drive ability. I suspect you will see a substantial loss of low end torque with a setup like that.

Because the hood scope would scoop water when it comes over the top of your hood / bonnet - and believe me - it can!

If it is over the hood, it will submerge the intake where it is now. But I get water up to the hood far less often than I get water up to the fender.

Dude, that's a $1000. And we don't have trucks with snorkels on them in junk yards here. We barely have any Subarus in junk yards period. I have been looking for an engine for a friend for a month now.

Snorkel if you can. Water can easily come over the bonnet without entering the intake. Imagine going through the water with a decent bow wave, and one of the tires momentarily drops into a hole and then pops out. Water will go over the bonnet, but not necessarily into the intake.

1k for a snorkel :surprised: they're $400-$500 here brand new. if water is the reason for your mod, a snorkel is the only safe way to do it.by putting a bonnet scoop in you would have to attach some kind of other filter to stop dust and crap coming in. other wise you'll be cleaning the filter once a fortnight. and if you do that it might restrict the cold air coming in and you'll be left with the hot air in the engine bay. plus having an intake so close to your throttle body will make your engine sound a lot different. if your still keen pull of your intake leaving the filter box go for a drive and give it some.

From the above link:
"As for the cost of the snorkel it wasn't cheap. But then again, compared to the cost of destroying your motor, (water injestion/hydro lock) which would be big $$$
Snorkel=$525
Tubing=$10
Bending=$242
Fitting=$220
TOTAL $997"

OK! what i said was
if you can do it yourself
if means no bending and fitting labour costs. how much do you think a pod filter, installation, cutting of your bonnet and fitting of a brand new bonnet scoop (seeing as you will not get one from the wreckers) will cost?

I don't mean to be rude - but to me there seems to be a lot of people on here that don't consider doing the work themselves on this forum - its straight to the "professionals"...

If its a relatively simple thing to do and you have some time, why not see how hard it is to do/or if anyone else has done it to guide you through the mod.

After converting my L to MPFI EA82 (L touring wagon injected engine), rebuilt another MPFI to keep it going a long time, then cooking that one, I'm up to the stage of an impreza EJ motor into my L - I've almost got all the parts I need, its just time I need now. I've also welded and installed my welded diff into the rear of my L -> the traction from that thing is amazing! That mod only cos me a diff and my time, it was a cheap mod but well worth it.

Same as the snorkel - you'll be happy you've done it once its on - regardless of paying for it or doing it yourself, its will be a worth while exercise that won't need to be played with once its on - plus it'll make your subi really look the goods!

I've also heard that it can be just as cheap to go to an exhaust joint and get a stainless steel one made up for the price of a plastic unit if you find the right place or know someone in the business - a lot in this world is not about what you know, its who you know :iconwink:

Cheers

Bennie

The factory intakes are designed to stop water entry into the engine,
Stopping with the intake below the water will always end badly but they will handle a fair bit of a dunk.

I learned how well the stock intake stops water during TS Fay, back in Sept. My buddy's Impreza sucked up enough water to hydrolock his engine and bust open the crankcase. And that was in his driveway. If I had unlimited funds, I would have a cone filter mounted in a scoop on the roof.

Generally the factory setup is pretty good. Go much deeper and you can get air into the car via the HVAC system. What some of us have done in the states is re-rout the snorkus to get its air from the HVAC intake below the windshield, it works well.

Now if the interior is not an issue, then you can do snorkles for much less and actually halfway decent looking with PCV tubing.
