As the title says. From most of what ive read and seen online people who offroad their Subarus put them back to stock when they sell them; IE. removed bullbar, lift, lights, big tyres, etc...

I know that you won't get much more in price selling them/it with all the extra mods but people seem to think that since a Subaru isn't a 'real 4WD' that you shouldn't buy one modified due to thrashing and mistreatment.
It is partly true but just because they have lift, bullbar, lights, etc.. doesn't mean that it won't last for many more thousands or hundreds of thoughsands of km/miles.

(This thread doesn't include the H6 Foz that Dulagarl has because thats a beast and well worth the price it was going for aswell as its capability).

Would any of you guys want to buy a Subaru thats possibly been offroad knowing or not knowing what its been through? Or would you get a stock one and do the mods you want yourself?

Do any of you plan to sell your Subies in a few years to upgrade or what not? Will you put it back to stock or leave it modded?

Im just curious to know.

Whew!

When I read the title, I was afraid the forum was being sold!

When i bought my subie i was glad it had a gentle life, regular services, etc.

With just the little bit of knowledge i have now i would be reluctant to buy an "offroaded" subie knowing that it had a harder life, even if it had been loving cared for. It puts a lot of strain on engine, gearbox, Cvs of course (but no real biggy), can suck water into diffs causing rust, stresses the chassis which can cause door misalignment or even cracks in load bearing positions, in fact every part of the car suffers.

So if selling a modded car i would be likely to keep all the bits that i knew would make my next subie go better, assuming they would fit. Or i could sell em separately.

Of course there are exceptions...H6 Foz & H6 Liberty come to mind lol
Buying a well cared for, modded subie with all the bugs & kinks worked out has its advantages...

Mine had a gentle life too until just over 18months ago when I bought her.... then it was all over :lildevil: Shes never going to be the same but im happy with the end result. I probably won't be selling my Foz because in 5 years time there will be nothing left but broken bits and awesome memories for a lifetime.

Man ive done some stupid things in her and caused some damage and if I were to do it again I would do it differently but for now im going to make the most of her. Use and abuse since its a first car for me.

Thats a good question.
I think it would depend on what type of offroading its done (& how hard)
Which in itself may or may not be obtainable.
For me personally (if I was buying) I don't think it would bother me, as I would be modding it anyway :iconwink:

No I don't plan on selling my Forry any time soon & yes, I would leave it as is with all the mods still on.
Then again, by the time it does come to choose a new vehicle, there won't be much of my Forry left anyway :poke:if you know what I mean :lildevil:
For those of you that have been on trips with me, I think you'll know what I mean

I'd want to know the driver and the cars service history. I've taken both my Forries off road and I sincerely believe that they are none the worse for it. Mechanical sympathy goes a long way- knowing and understanding what is good for a car and what is not

Knowing the service history is a must.

If the service history isn't up to date, or not available, then it's bye-bye from me & I'd be walking away...no sale.

I put mine back to standard to sell mine because theres not a lot of people that want their subaru modded that way, and those that do would do it themselves.
Mine was for sale for 5 months with only one interest with all the gear on it, and that person was going to take it off anyway. I then returned it back to stock and it sold in two weeks with lots of interest. I also got to sell my front bar and lift off to someone who wanted it.
Subarus are a fragile car for offroad and i know if i were to buy another one i would be looking for a stock one and modifying it myself again.

There is so much difference between a few gravel roads & steep, rutted fire tracks or salt laden beaches so very good point.

Yep i totally agree, its not just where but HOW you drive it that counts.

lol

Wicked 1st car Taza.

Ruby Scoo will probably be retired in favour of a good body that hasn't been offroaded...

I reckon this is what you should look at doing Taza, get a good foz once you're current one is tired and swap all the bits over.

Cheers

Great idea, but that means that if you do it your stuck with another L-Series body but atleast you have all the bits to put in. I would be in the same boat but could possibly consider going inot a Foz GT body, GT engine or EJ25 behind a/my Dual-Range AWD box would be a heap better over my EJ20.

I really like the idea. Will keep it in mind ina few years time.

Like the other guys would say, i don't care where it's been driven as long as it's been taken care of. Car Fax here in the US would be a must. Last used car i bought before the Forry, i came to found out had the whole front end replaced & had a constant squeak to it as the frame had been jacked up.
Being modified would make it a better deal, but that should also raise flags to take a very close look at everything.

In response to what I'm planning to do with my Forester (in terms of selling it when the time comes), I will advertise it with the mods to people who I feel will need them or might want to buy the car with them installed, more because I'd like to see it go on to another offroad user than anything else. Then if that doesn't work out I would return it to stock and sell it and the mods separately. Probably make significantly more money that way anyway.
