Just finished watching Bathurst. Did you see those firies in action when the Falcon rear ended the wall and splashed fuel everywhere. What a fire! They were right on it while the track was still live. Well done to Mark Larkham and Channel 7 for interviewing them and bringing their brave, unpaid actions to everyone's attention. They were at risk of being burnt from the flames or another possible explosion, or from being hit by a race car.

Yes it was a scary accident. Especially when the fire started. It really took hold of the car.
It seemed like an eternity before David Besnard emerged from the car, thankfully unhurt.

Great to see that the fire marshals were not forgotten & given the credit they deserve by the media.

They did a fantastic job indeed, by putting their own lives in danger, to save him.

As you can see from the footage, those Fire Marshals did a fantastic job :)

I'm still trying to figure out how the fire started away from the car. You'd think that with hot brakes and exhaust it would be the car that would be the ignition source. And since the exhaust exits half way down the car, and it was a rear end shunt, it's not as if that would have been ripped off and become the ignition source. Was there a smoker nearby? Next time Besnard has a pad change I bet he remembers to pump the pedal to bring the pads up to the disc!

I was thinking the very same thing.

I'm just glad to hear that he was ok. He's one very lucky guy.
Good to see that he hasn't lost his sense of humor either, with his comment about forgetting to bring some marshmallows with him :)

Still not sure whether it is fuel or water from the tyre safety barriers on the lens of the camera. That was one of the few interesting moments in a race that until the last 15 laps was pretty boring. But what a finish!

I was extremely impressed when former racer come commentator Mark Larkham went to the effort of interviewing them and giving them real recognition on national TV. I know I am probably biased but I was really pleased for them. No motor race or rally anywhere in the world would exist without volunteers like these blokes. While I have never been a fire marshal it is obvious they have a very risky job. In my other life as a Clerk of Course you always dread having to put the call out for medical or fire to scramble. Last weekend shows why. And as volunteers they had that huge fire out very quickly. Well trained and well done.

I missed all of this :(

Sounds like another great ending to a great race!

Cheers

hahahahahahah, that's about the funniest racing video i've ever seen! I can imagine how freaked out he must have been. Nascar guys have probably never taken a blind curve in their life! That's just a great video
I think i'm goin to really enjoy watching more of the V8 super cars when they come to Austin.

Here is 3 times NASCAR champion Darrell Waltrip's first run around Mt Panorama.

They ran a F1 car around there earlier in the year. If the V8 Supercar freaked him out, imagine what an F1 would have done. I have to say though that as a passenger I make a great driver. I won't even get in the passenger seat to do a skidpan event, so I understand what he is saying

I love that comment of his "Geological Oddity"
If he said that after just one lap, I wonder what he would have said after doing the entire race & 161 laps

Well, we've seen 3 times NASCAR champion Waltrip's ride around Bathurst- now here is 3 times Australian Touring Car Champion Peter Brock- this time in the passenger seat- around the same track. Brock appears a bit more laid back-whadaya reckon?
