I have this with my 2001 Forester (2.0l N/A manual). I know exactly what it is; the spark plus gaskets. Which in simple language is a rubber seal is broken or worn down.
No biggy though, you can get it replaced but the engine may need to be pulled out. Its not a hard job would just take abit because the gasket covers (sides of the engine) need to be removed. and new seals put in.
It will give you a brief idea of what needs to be done to replace the seals. I just wipped the oil out of the spark plug wells and and put new ones in and new leads. will get around to doing the seals some other time, probably my 200,000km service.
Engine definitely wont need pulling. Is a fidly job with it in, but definitely doable.
Might just need to remove things like the washer bottle etc to have room.
You were right Kevin, the RHS was much more straight forward with more room to manouvre. Decided to check the resistance on the spark plug leads while I was at it and found the 2 on the LHS were way over the recommended resistance so had to relace them as well. Running beautifully now!
