when driving my 2000 forester gt manual around a buzzing noise appears when i just touch the accelarator pedal. its sounds like a bearing type noise coming from around the gear lever area. happens through all gears. can someone point me in the right direction as to what may be the cause of this.
UPDATE
saw the mechanic today, they seem to think that its the bearing/s in the gearbox. a quote of up to $4k was mentioned, either fixing or replacing the gearbox. they also mentioned that they could do it cheaper with supplied reco box.
now the qustions...
- who supplies reco boxes in victoria?
- can i easily replace the existing 5 speed with a dual range box?

It is quite easy to replace it with a dual-range 5 speed gearbox. You could pretty much put a box from a 2000 Forester in yours. As long as your not dropping the clutch the gearbox will be fine.
Speak to the guys over at All Drive Subaroo https://www.subarugearbox.com.au/

I enquired last week about another gearbox for my Forester and they seem to be able to do some good deals. Plus if you sell/swap your old/stuffed gearbox over then that will knock a few hundred bucks off the price of the new one.

You might want to give these guys a call.

Kevin has had work done by them & I have too :)
It was actually Kevin who suggested them to me, (thanks Kevin :iconwink:)

They really know their Subi's & were very helpful too.
They ship Australia wide aswell.

Hope this helps :)

Might be rear diff issues, centre console issues, speedo issues, driveshaft issues, ABS issues and tailshaft issues with a D/R box. Is one a pull type clutch and the other a push type- might be issues there too.

There is some of that. I thought/was told that Subarus are like Lego, just plug and play :biggrin:

Well there is, but as long as they are the same bits. Driveshafts vary from model to model. A mate put a 6 speed into his WRX and had to shorten the tailshaft and play around with angles, whereas mine went straight in. Except the new tailshaft used bushes at the centre mount and the old did not. I had to knock the tone rings off the front driveshafts to fit my hubs. All ok though if you do your homework- and if you get from the same MY. ABS sensors on an MY99 apparently different to MY00 and later.

spoke to guys at https://www.subarugearbox.com.au/ . just weighing up my options in regard to replacing gearbox with same or going the dual range route.(they went through what issue id face in changing to dual range. they will gear the box to suit the diff etc... )they also mentioned installing lsd diff in the front, would this still be an option if i replaced gearbox for same, is it worth it?
while im ripping my subi apart is there anything else i should check over while its out of service (the engine is regularly serviced, but nothing else!:surprised:) the old girl is 230k old now

The D/R box is not as strong the WRX box- I assume the GT uses the same box but I do not know. Be nice and it should be ok. If you get an LSD- what type? There is viscous, helical and plated. If the $ allow it certainly worth a thought, although it does bring torque steer into the occassion- except you're being nice to you gearbox so you won't get it will you!

well well well! after chatting to a few mechanics that listened to the car while taking it for a 5 minute spin and both telling me that the gearbox was stuffed, i finally got a mechanic to take a proper look at it and have been informed that there is nothing wrong with the gearbox or the car. so hopefully, its onwards and upwards for my suby.

Sounds like you found a good honest mechanic there 2000forrestergt. You might want to stay in touch with them :)
