'Tinkling' noise when foot off clutch pedal...

With my foot off the clutch pedal and car in neutral I have a 'tinkling' noise / bit like a cricket (as in Jimminy, not the game we Ausies beat the English at most of the time).
Standing outside the car it sounds like a squeak.
As soon as I put the slightest pressure on the clutch pedal the noise disappears. When in gear and moving it is still there.
Any ideas?

Clutch/throw out bearing it would seem

So, an opportunity to use my limited grasp of my ancestors native Irish language. I believe the relevant word is 'feck'. :/

Will do a search before I repeat questions that have been asked elsewhere however, will probably be back with some a bit later.

However, I assume that this is something I should fix ahead of it setting the deadline?

Hard to say without being there- it may not be that. Check your gearbox oil level and take it to a mechanic to verify the diagnosis

Yes - or - depends how good you are at clutchless gear changes!

When I did my clutch in Feb 2009 - about a week after the Victorian bush fires - it went from useable to locked in about 500 metres. Luckily I was literally around the corner from my mechanic when it occurred. Really wouldn't want to try and drive it far in that condition.

Hopefully the clutch is ok - as I say only about 2 and a bit years old, although have done about 100,000 km in that time.

Might look at fitting one of the SUMO kits if they is one for the Outback. probably gives me the impetus to do the Scorpion low range, I guess.

As they say, "it is an ill wind ..." :iconwink:

My Forester does the exact same thing, and if its the same as mine its nothing to worry about. My clutch is brand new and I got the noise investigated - apparently its just a noise that clutch happens to make. If its the same as mine, you can spray some WD 40 on there all the time or you can not worry about it.

YotaRu is off at the mechanics right now for a similar noise. Mine happens under a bit different circumstances though, foot on the clutch. Throwout bearing is a possibility, but he also thinks it could be the pilot bearing. My clutch is a fairly new as well, so that makes him think it isn't the throwout bearing.

Good luck to you!!! And so you don't go through what mr turbo did, I would certainly look into the TSK kit, I might be too.

Yes the TSK Kit is/would most certainly worth a look. Just a shame I didn't know about it (TSK Kit) earlier, as it would have saved me quite a few $$$

My clutch makes a similar noise and stops when i slightly compress the clutch, it has done this since new... Walking past an Outback stationary at the lights I often hear a similar noise also and it is something I listen out for as I have questioned why my car makes it.

The weeks leading up to replacing my clutch the noise was a lot louder especially on cold mornings, I was advised it was most likely the Spigot bearing. Mechanic said I needed to replace it and because the labor was extensive I choose to replace the whole clutch at the same time.
