Hi, I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I just can't seem to find the answer.

I have a 99 with blown struts and I know SG struts are a popular choice as a replacement, my question is...

Can I get any strut from 03-08 forester and swap it in?

Adding your location in will help us in pointing you to the right direction as certain brands may not be available in parts of the world.
Also, welcome to ORS bombagee.

I believe u can use any 03-05 struts with sf springs and sf top hats, but if u get 03-08 springs u are gonna need different top hats.

^If anyone else can confirm or deny that please do!

Yeah. I have SG struts with SF springs on an SF.

SG springs will not go on an SF because the top of the SG spring is narrower than an SF spring.

the advantage is that the spring seat is higher on an SG strut, hence you can use bigger tyres.

Howdy and :welcome:bombagee!!!

The SG struts will give you a bit of a lift and a bit more tire clearance, but myself and another member did some testing a few years ago and found that the SF struts do have more down travel, just something else to throw into the mix.:iconwink:

G'day bombagee & :welcome: to ORS.

I'm not quite sure myself, but I'm sure someone will know whether it's a straight swap or not :)

just the thread I was looking for!

I will be swapping SG strut assemblies taken from a 07 forester onto my SF this weekend. Hope it's not to hard to do

Easy to do
The only thing you have to mod is the bracket for the brake line
Hacksaw one side of the bracket where the brake line goes in.
With pliers twist the bracket so you can get out the brake line, do the same with the new strut before you put it back in it saves bleeding the brakes
Then all back together twist back. If you have a different bracket and the locking clip wont work just use cable ties works real good

the swap worked great! Took just under 4 hours to complete the job with the help of one my friends.

I did however end up pulling off the brake line on all four sides to get the strut assembly out. and as yarney said, the only mod was I had to use zip ties to hold the brake line in place on the front struts.

Overall, it was pretty easy to do.

I have yet to take pics, other than the fender arch to ground clearance photos i took before and after. I'll snap some when I hit the trail this weekend.
