I have a gearbox from a 98 sti I'd like to use in my 91 liberty wagon.
I am currently running GT Legacy motor and box so the ratios are right.
I am wondering if I can expect any dramas swapping them over?
Mainly if they have the same type of clutch setup (push or pull type), but also if they have the same splines for the front driveshafts. Or any other possible stuff ups I might make!
Cheers

If the nipple for the master cylinder is mounted forward, almost in line with the end (back) of the block and below the throttle cable connection it is a push type clutch. If the nipple is at the back, above where the bellhousing meets the gearbox, it is a pull type clutch. If you need a photo let me know

Thanks again!
Looks like I'll be driving the L series everywhere for a while yet.
Walking past an undrivable car every day is starting to get depressing.., sigh
Appreciate the input,
Cheers

As for the driveshafts, there are 2 main types. One type has the spline of the axle going into the front diff. The other type has a splined shaft coming out of the diff, and secured by a small steel pin to the axle. Are you sure the diff ratios are the same? Normally the STI has much shorter gearing- I think 4.44 or something, but then I don't know what the JDM cars have specifically. If the GT is post 98, it will have a different bellhousing pattern but you can still get 4 bolt holes lined up. I'm told this will work no worries but I'd prefer them all to match up.

Pretty certain the ratios are the same, according to a chart I downloaded from somewhere and the sticker on the bellhousing. I think the ratio I am running is different to the Aussie RS.
The replacement box has the stubs hanging out of it so fingers crossed my current one is the same. If not I'll chuck the old one back in, notchy 3rd gear or not! Hardly use it anyway. :)
Thanks once again for your thoughts, always appreciated.

Could you post up a photo please? I also need to know this.

Cheers,

This is a push type set up as found on non turbo Subarus. Red cross marks the slave cylinder, blue is the bell housing/front diff housing. Note the position of the inlet hose and bleed nipple. If it is not in this relative position to the dog bone and throttle. and is located closer to the firewall, it is a pull type clutch. I was going to take a photo of this from the Impreza, but it would mean removing the strut brace and TMIC.
