Taza's 2001 Forester

I bought my Subaru Forester last year in May 2010 as my first car. It is a 2001 Limited that had 119,000km on the clock, was a 5 speed mnaul with dual range transmission and was completely stock.
I wanted a car I could go down the beach and do light offroading in but didn't want a big, expensive 4x4. Since then my unknown passion for cars, mechanics, Subaru's and offroading has all come out.

After one week of having it I tried it out on the sand dunes and was very impressed, even with the car being stock with highway tyres.

Modifications done to my Forester since I have had it.

Firstly I removed all the plastics, like the nudge bar, headlamp protectors, fog lamp protectors, bonnet protectors, etc...
Added some seat covers, new stereo head unit and speakers. I was given a sub and 2 amplifers from a work collegue that didn't use them due to the lack of room in his Jeep Wranger.
Rhino roof racks were also added along with some kayak carriers, a roof basket and 2 spotties mounted to the grille.

Next came my DIY steet sign, aluminum bash plate.

My highway tyres very soon because bald to to all the on and offroad use and abuse. After much research I went with a larger size in some Geolander AT-S.
Stock: 205/70R15
Now: 215/70R15

(insert picture here)

Now with stock suspension and back springs that were sagging so bad you couldn't even get your hand between the tyre and wheel arch I though it was time for some new ones. Also due to my stock, sagged setup I had damaged a few things offroad.
This included damaging my front and rear bumpers, nearly ripping off the rear bumper, damaging the trailer lights plug, cracking and bending my sump guard, denting very badly the engine sump, damaging a tyre, dents in the muffler, etc...

Now here in Western Australia 50mm lift from stock is legal, so I went with a set of Dobinson Raised heavy Duty Springs (25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear). I combined these with 25mm (1") strut lift blocks from Subtle Solutions.

As of yet, having my lift kit combination in the foz for a few months I am yet to need any more clearance. Approach and departure angle was also improved dramatically but is still sometimes a small issue on the odd occasion:biggrin:

Now while on this trip to Perth and down South to get my lift kit installed and offroad at the famous Mundaring Powerline track my forester with only 148,000km had the clutch go while on the beach

Turned out to be an expensive little holiday

You can read about it here (there is a few videos and some good pictures):

Adventures...

As above that was one of my major adventure in the Forester, it was a good trip that will never be forgotten

Bogged for 6hours in the sand.... Not using a distritution strap when having a Holden Rodeo snatch you out as hard a s they can causes some damage!
Heres the story (pictures included):

My Forester Specifications:

  • 2001 MY02 Subaru Forester Limited
  • EJ20 2.0l engine producing 92kW & 184Nm of torque.
  • 4.11 Final drive
  • 5speed Manual transmission
  • 1.444 reduction low range (45% from standard high range)
  • 15" stock steel rims
  • K&N air filter soon to be installed

I had gotten sick of paying $300+ or $500+ each time I went for a service or repair at a mechanic. And at $100 an hour labour it was just killing my pocket so with no help except from Google, the internet and Subaru forums I started to do the general maintenance myself

This inculdes oil changes, diff oil changes, filters, O2 sensors, spark plugs and leads, adjusting the hand brake, brake pads and rotors, CV's, CV boots, globes, wiring and installing eletrics, etc... Pretty easy stuff and if I can do it (now a Computer Technician) then anyone can

Getting my front driver CV out to replace a boot. My first time doing it.

My current projects:.

  • The R160 (Subaru Diff) rear locker project - coming along slowly when I have spare time but there is much trial and error while drawing it up on CAD programs.

My Future projects/mods:

  • 3 way switch for the engine fans - Cut out, auto and always on
  • Maybe a Subaxtreme bulbar
  • possibly lockers

Guide:

  • CV Boot & Axel replacement

This is my Forester today!

(insert pictures here)

Her name is Lisa, she has 149,913km and at the present time sitting on the front lawn awaiting some new sprak plug leads.

Even when she is damaged she has always gotten me home and is very reliable. I love my little Subaru wagon, always have heaps of fun times with her. Sometimes good and sometimes bad
Wouldn't trade her for anything else except maybe another Subaru

Great journal & write up taza :discomonkey:
I must do one myself about my Forry one day too, as it has had a few mods done to it since buying it :iconwink:

Keep up the good work Taza!

excellent.

All of the best Foresters are darke metallic blue I reckon.

Had one of my hard drives stuff up in my computer, had heaps of my photos on but im working on getting it recovered :censored::furious:
... yes I know since I work in IT that you always keep your important things backed up but I didn't :(

Working in IT doesn't mean you do what you suggest everyone else does! lol... Reminds me, I've got to do a backup again soon. Been a couple of months.

Just started doing my fan cut-out/always on switch on my Forester today after work. Will post up instructions and wiring diagram when I finish it

Still have to post/make a video of my Maxtrax in action too.

Looking at doing some long term (4-5months) of saving small amounts (while saving for uni)so I am able to buy a Subaxtreme bullbar for my Foz. That would really put the icing on the cake and make me completely happy with my Foz. make it c a complete 4x4 then

Also my Father is going to help me with another long term project of creating a rear wheel and jerry can carrier. It will probably be attached to the Towbar and involving cutting the rear bumper partly to also help with departure angles. I have read on here that a few people have done it. I know Barry did it with his 05 Outback and it looks awesome. Beighwagon and El Freddo did a rear bar version for either L-Series.

Taza

Taza: You're showing a great deal of commitment to the vehicle. Trust me, it will pay off. In relation to the bullbar, scour ebay all the time: they do show up and if you're patient you'll get one. Just search forester bullbar and subaru parts from time to time.

My car is pretty well everything to me... I would love to have something similar to your H6 Foz but with my own tweaks and what not so it's its own, not a copy. I don't plan to do any engine upgrades or down the drive train, what I have serves my purposes for now and the near future.

I look every night on Ebay, every state on Gumtree along with here and AuSubaru. Hope I can find a used one this year. But if that doesn't happen I will probably just buy a new one. If anyone sees one for a 1st gen Foz let me know asap

If you doing to do a mod or anything to a vehicle do it properly, that way it won't have to be redone again or anytime soon. I have done some damage offroad due to not having the correct protection or not using the correct method of doing things so now im more aware and geared up.

You'll be the first bloke I think of if I see a gen 1 foz bar for sale.

- Ok my gearbox whine has gotten slightly worse but since it started I have done 5000km.
This is what 1st Gear Hi Range sounds like. Its this gear alone too.... its really starting to annoy me  I might change my gearbox oil on the weekend. After some research I have learned that it could also possibly be a brushing and that Red Line Light Weight gearbox oil works well in Subarus.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O3FTQsl9qY"]WRX First Gear Transmission Whine - YouTube[/ame]

- My Subaxtreme Sumpguard is arriving on Monday and I will be installing that, I only got a Subaxtreme one due to airbag compliances with the Australia vehicle safety laws in every state. If there wasn't a law that could give your insurance company a chance to not pay you out in an accident I would of custom made a steel sump guard but anyway this should do the job :raspberry:

- I have rotated my Geolander tyres too and done around 11,000km on them with still 80+% tread.

- My fan cut out switch is complete and I just have to wire in a buzzer so I don't accidentally turn it off. I didn't do the 3 way on/off/auto switch as im not an electrician and it was abit too complexe for me

- Last weekend I finally washed/hosed the mud and dirt out of my engine bay and thought it be a good idea not to let it dry for a few hours in the sun. Started driving only to realise the check engine light is on.
This lead me to discover that anyone with a 1st Generation Subaru Forester or with an EJ20 N/A or turbo only has OBD I not OBD II.
Note: This also includes N/A imprezas and Liberty's with the EJ20 2.0l in Australia.
There are two green connectors under the dash that are disconnected and when connected the check engine light flashes.

Slow flashes meaning 10
Fast flashes meaning 1

When these are counted you can go online and find out what the error is. Mine was added to 22 which turned out to be the knock sensor but the car seems to run completely normal. After letting the engine bay dry out properly I reset the ECU and cleared the light  It has not reappeared so I am confindent the issue is resloved.

Top Tip: Let your engine bay dry for a few hours in the sun after washing it!

- Now with very few mods to do to the car as im saving for uni next year in Perth I will be making metal guards to protect the fuel tank as there are only plastic ones which are not sufficient. I don't know of anyone who makes metal ones for Subaurs.

- I have been able to recover my hard drive with all my photos, music and the locker project on too. It took me a month and some real dodgy wirring and work but I managed to do it.

- Last weekend I went to Dongra with a few mates just for the day. had a look around and did abit of beach driving.

Great pictures Taza. Sorry about the gearbox, that frickin sucks!

Man, you have been covering some ground since you put the tires on! I hope the Geo's last longer than 55,000km with the price you guys have to pay for tires. Dig the roof basket too
