I took Rally's advice a few months ago and used Castrol Multi-Trax GL5 90w front diff/gearbox oil. That was 8,000km ago or something like that and all is good there. Anyway its time for the rear diff oil, its an easy job I know and while I change it I might do the rear diff breather. I have been told to drop the diff to make it easier.
Anyway whats a good rear diff oil, its an open stock standard diff. Im in a hot climate so something that can deal with lots of heat

That diff could take anything. Unless you want to run a built turbo motor a pump 300hp + through it it shouldn't ever be a problem running any type of manual gearbox oil. I'd just save my money and get something like a cheap Valvoline oil for it.
If it were an LSD, then things would be different.

I'm not sure Multritrax is the right oil for the rear diff. I know with the Impreza it is not, but it runs a plated rear diff not a vsicous, so check. Last time i checked the Forrie's rear diff the level was fine so I didn't need to investigate further

Gearboxes require thick oil because of the synchros, they rely on squishing the oil in between the synchro rings to get enough drive and speed up the gear and shaft you are shifting into. With a open diff, it is just huge gears needing lubrication and cooling. Hell, engine oil would probably work fine.
