Gets my blood flowin!
With our more populated roadways, we're only allowed to have two trailers hooked up, unless you're in Alaska.
I remember a TV show a few years back that was about the road trains down unda'.
Brings back one of my favorite movies and the theme song!
I had to put it down to 240p to show up on my hd laptop.

Then the video reminds me of this old Hays County Plymouth Fury that sits at the Precint over in Kyle, just up the road a little ways!

It sure does :)
I'd kind of forgotten at just how big they really are :)
I remember seeing them (as a teenager) when I was in the outback years ago whilst on a family holiday

Watching the old US TV shows from the 70's when they had cop chases was such a laugh. Watching those over powered cop cars going around a corner was a perfect display of non handling. The cop car would come to a stop and the thing would still be bouncing on it's suspension even after a foot chase and shoot out. I can only hope the real police cars had some handling, otherwise anyone with a car with half decent handling would leave it for dead. Looking at that green car- a Plymouth you say- just brings it all back. As for Smoky & the Bandit- I remember my mum taking me as a kid to the movies to watch that.

With regards the road train photos, one surely was taken of the Eyre Highway in WA, another looks like the Barkly Hwy in NT. I have a video of us in the Falcon overtaking a road train in my Falcon- the road is only one lane wide and while he was kind enough to move to the left, he did not slow down!

You must have been a Dukes of Hazzard fan
I loved that show growing up. Until a couple of years ago, they were still showing the re-runs on tv. Then of course they did a remake a few years ago with Johnny Knoxville, Jessica Simpson & Sean William Scott, although nothing is like the good ole' ones!

I know i've hijacked this thread in all sorts of wrong with this, but it's somewhat relevant!

So what happened to the road trains??? Or, am I safe making an assumption here???:iconwink:

I remember seeing some show about them when I was a kid, they are cool.

Still going AFAIK. Trying to overtake them on gravel is a tad tricky, but gee those blokes can drive. I remember being at Innaminka, and this 2 dog road train rolled in, and did a perfect reverse park first go. Most people in Corollas cannot do that in 3 attempts! And with one exception in my expereince, they tend to be fairly decent bunch with none of the attitude issues that a number of Melbourne-Sydney Brisbane truckies have.

Saw someone post this the other day, thought it was pretty cool!

Yeah - from 3 months ago!

Road Trains are alive and well in the Aussie outback, and you're right, the drivers are usually great blokes.

Yeah i get a bit sick of the "cowboy" truckies that give the good truckies such a bad name :yell:

I've only seen a couple of small road trains but understand a few things to be true:
1) if on a gravel road & you see one coming...PULL OVER. A broken windscreen is a bit of a downer :(
2) Be careful overtaking...they WONT slow down for you even if they might move over, & they are looong :surprised:
3) they are exceptionally skilled drivers! They need to be!

Anyone have some more footage of trucks doing river crossings? that one was cool

Try overtaking a big 3x trailer road train with your 2.0L N/A foz packed up like this......

Took us abit to get past with a top speed of 120km/hr. lol

hahaha no thanks. Thats where i'd consider either meekly following or pulling over & having a nice cuppa

I'm with you Nachaluva, I'd be pulling over too I think.
Having a cuppa & a break sounds like a good alternative to me :)

I managed  With the long straight roads for as far as the eye could see it wasn't an issue plus dropping it back to 4th gear with the long streches made it doable. Once you cruising along it was fine, ust getting upto speed.

I did however have to take quite a few stops along the way with fuel economny reaching as high was 20L per 100km  and with the price fo fuel up north arouound $1.85 its quite abit :raspberry: All worth it and good fun though for the awesome trip I had  I might just add is 65pictures to post online too much for one thread? Plus videos?
