Sensitive throttle on Outback?

Anyone else notice the extremely sensitive throttle? I find I only ever need about a quarter of the pedal most of the time and maybe would use half when really wanting to go hard. The rest of the pedal is pretty much useless as it has no effect on acceleration.
The other thing is the sensitivity from nothing to just on throttle. It sometime lurches while coming on the throttle after cruising even just gently.
Basically wondering if this is just normal?

Oh, I probably should of said mine is a 99 gen 3 Outback. It has straight throttle cable from pedal to throttle body. So it isn't "fly by wire"

My EJ22 has that sensitivity at low speeds - just at that point where you need some throttle but its almost closed... I think my TPS isn't set correctly. I need to swap it out anyway as I've lost the dust/water cover off the TPS...

In your case a heavy foot??

My Brumby with the EJ22 was a bit like it, but bearable. This is pretty much ridiculous. The TB is way to big I believe. IT can give to much air for the N/A engine. Thus making most of the pedal useless.

I drive like a grandpa, being that I am trying to save money. Even the cruise control can't make it smooth when going from coasting to powering.

I'm thinking of changing the TB's linkage for a larger one or maybe an exponential one.

Maybe there's something more at play here. Has it always had this issue? I ask this as I don't remember you complaining about it when you got it.

Sounds like you're being a grumpy old fart comlaining :rolleyessarcastic:

It has, I thought I'd just get used to it. But it's quite annoying when the car is so soft and comfortable and then bam, it jolts all over the place. Also without using cruise control it is very hard to hold a steady speed due to the throttle sensitivity.

I am just a grumpy old fart, but no car that I've driven before has been like this so I assume there is a way to solve it!

I really need to drive another Outback like mine, just has to be a manual as autos would soak up all the harshness.

I am getting used to it from driving it more, but speeding is becoming a problem because only a small amount of accelerator can get the speed going up quite quick. So i have to be juggling between accelerator and no accelerator at times. But im getting more used to that too.

I'm going to take some measurements of the linkage on the TB and see if I can find a bigger one or maybe an exponential one so it takes more pedal to start with for the same movement and then will still give full throttle right at the bottom of the pedal.
Other option is I could design something for my brother-in-law to machine for me.

In all my cars (FC Holden, 4.2l Torana, Twin Cam Corolla, Triumph 2000) there has not been much difference between half and full throttle as far as acceleration or power up hills goes, and I thought that's how cars are supposed to be. The OB is much the same in that most of the 'action' is between off-idle and half. I would call it a smooth, gentle car to drive.

Would personally prefer than most of the power be in the 2nd half of the throttle, so the otherway around. But im not complaining I'm used to it now, and i drive it best out of all cars i have driven.

Would personally prefer than most of the power be in the 2nd half of the throttle ....
Come to think of it, that's the way dual and quad throat carbies worked - extra power came in, sometimes lots extra, when the 2nd half of the carby started working. Old turbos too, I think.

So, there you go - replace the fuel injection with a 450 Holley ...

But seriously - back to the original question - I can't say I've noticed mine being 'too sensitive', but then I drive with a soft right foot - just a habit I've developed from trying to drive as smoothly as possible out of consideration for my passengers.

I found if I undid the clips on the top front of the engine and let it curve naturally it cured my sticky problems, everyone would clip them in as soon as they looked at the motor so I cut them off in the end and just let it sit in the AFM mount.
