Hi Everyone,

After reading taza’s post from last year about his car accident out bush. This accident happened about a year ago. I thought I should share mine and how dangerous outback driving can be also how well built Subaru’s are and the reason we brought another. And MAINLY how Kind, helpful and caring people are in the Country compared to the city.

Long story short we left on our Australia trip from Sydney after my girlfriend just finished UNI. Went up and down South Australia and were heading towards WA.

That morning everything went we basically drove dirt road down to the bay it was rated at 100km/h and corners at 80km/h the road had been recently graded so was a bit slippery then normal so we took precautions and due to the amount of weight in the car.

We were heading to streaky bay from Baird bay, SA which is five to six hrs drive from the SA/WA boarder. Everything was going well then we entered a wide corner at about 60-70km/h so not much wheel turn.
Then the Back end came out counter steered a bit too much and having no grip on the road we went sliding towards the side of the road towards decent sized shrubs and bushes then all of a sudden we were on the roof.
I managed to kick my window out and crawl out of it lucky i'm not very big then ran over to open hers which took a few goes as it was jammed due to the impact.

Luckily enough we had someone drive past about 20mins after the accident, was very lucky hadn’t seen anyone for a good 6 or 7 hours. They got on their CB’s and notified the local panel beater and two other farming stations nearby within about 20mins we had a tractor and 2 Utes to help. After that we went back to the panel beater he let us borrow a ute went to the cop shop etc. we both walked out with no scratches or bruises 100% fine she was pretty upset for a lot of it. I was fine running on adrenalin until that night at about 8 or 9pm were it finally set in that i almost died etc and i'd never been in a car accident in my life. or come close to one until then.

They helped organise a flight to Pt Lincoln and the panel beater organised freight to Sydney we helped pack it with a mate of his, he then dropped us to the family that found us after the accident we stayed with them for the night and got driven to port lincion airport the next day where we got a flight to Adelaide then to Sydney.

If you look at the rocks towards the left of the picture we were pretty sure thats what rolled us as the rim buckled a bit

The car had pretty much brand new Michelin tyres on it probably about 10,00km. We ended up buying the same model car we got now just a year later, got it serviced, wacked a CB in it, new bridge stone AT duelers and head back off again lucky we had enough money to buy another car before the insurance came through.

We finished the rest of our trip with nothing going wrong except for Tyre puncture on the Gibb. Ended up doing about 25-30,000Km from memory in about 5 months got some amazing pictures and did plenty of dirty drivving and water crossings

Sorry to here Michael. Yeah I know what its like and luckily didnt roll my Forester.
I ended up hitting the bank and taking out half a tree at a decent speed too.

The left side is missing alot of paint from that but it has made me a safer driver on gravel :)
Great too here you got another Forester though and that you both were alright.
I have a photo somewhere of my skids which look almost the exact same. Will post it up when I find it.
Could you drive the Foz away? Im guessing the airbag/s didnt go off? Was much of your gear/stuff damaged, looks like the roof was crumpled in abit?

Sorry to hear about your Forry & accident mickyg.
Great to hear that you were able to walk away without a scratch.
Just goes to show how safe a Subi is for both it's driver & passengers.

Mr Turbo

That's full on mate!

Glad there was someone along shortly after your stack - and the generosity of the locals always amazes me! Hence why we help out when we can.

Cheers

Bennie

Wow!!! If you just saw the pictures, you would think no one walked away, let alone unhurt. Sorry for the loss of the car, but it sure did it's job of protecting you.

Happy to hear that you are all OK and glad that you got another Foz.

Sad about the car, but great to hear you're both alive and safe. Did you have a cargo barrier?

Regards,

Joel

That's frightening! Glad you were all OK. The 7 layers of steel in the B pillar certainly do the job!

They managed to half drive/drag it onto the car trailer with one of the utes, the steering was pretty bad, umm nothing really except for a water container and the lid from our engel. so not to bad. Nah the car didnt have airbags and if it did you'd want to hope that they deployed.

Did you have a cargo barrier?
Nah no cargo barrier didnt have room for one with all the gear we took along, so it took a little while to get everything out of the car after it got chucked around.

Wow, that's a bummer dude! Glad you guys are alright.
I remember back in highschool 2003-2004ish, learning that only about 33% of the roads down unda were actually paved. Is that about right?

Nah i wouldn't think so you might find that in Western Australia or the Northern Territory that anything that's not a Main or secondary road is dirt/gravel. But even so they are there usually top quality roads not that much different then driving on the tar.
