So I bought a used 03 forester xs. I has 127k on it and I have no idea if the timing belt has ever been changed. I took part of the cover off to look at the belt. It looks good to me but to be honest I havent looked at that many timing belts.

It still has the yellow white timing lines visable on the belt. So with that I assume after 127k these lines should have worn off by now?

Anybody have any words of wisdom that could let me know how to tell if a belt is old?

Thanks in advance
Sammy

It should be part of the srvice history- it should have been changed at 3 years/100,000k's. Check the log book. If in doubt-change it, the water pump, tensioner and check the pulleys. Mine had small cracks in it at 5 years- so it was getting risky

I was in the same exact postion as you. One day said, screw it and got a kit with everything in it. (belt, pump, tensioners, ect.) When i took off the belt cover, i had ball-bearings fall out and all the pulleys where toast beyond my belief. I have no idea how the car didn't make noise and actually drove!!! i was soooo happy i did the service! The pump had a crack in it...Im just glad i got to it before things went really really bad.

I took it on offroading and camping trips like that too, so if you ask me...just do it. One less thing you have to worry about!

I'd do it just to be on the safe side. And like carljwnc said, do the water pump while you're at it.
